FYI no streaming service pays more than US $0.01 per stream. And that’s at the very top end, with a premium paying customer in a premium market.
I found this article explaining how streams are calculated helpful: https://soundcharts.com/blog/music-streaming-rates-payouts
Lots of variables like country, service tier, content pool & user engagement factor in, making the "average" per stream unpredictable.
Tidal & Qobuz pay more per stream b/c they have less streams overall--making every stream more valuable. 1/
Most Millennials and GenZ use streaming to discover and share new music. If you primarily buy CDs, vinyl, or digital downloads, that's great! More power to you.
But very few of the younger generations are listening to the radio (which is still hard for indies to get on--even independent and college stations), they go to their streaming service of choice to find new music. And a lot of people are discovering music on Tik Tok or Instagram. The majority of younger people, in fact.
And suggesting indie artists must play live to build a following is just not going to work for every type of artist.
-playing live does not work easily for solo musicians in certain genres, without recruiting/hiring other musicians
-some artists live in remote areas with no good local live options
-venues want artists to already HAVE an audience they bring with them. It's the ol' "you need 5 years of experience for this entry level job" conundrum
I’m enjoying everyone’s posts on the various #Fedivision entries. I wish I had the spoons to post about every entry, but maybe nobody wants my asshole opinions anyway. Especially since I have no skin in the game. I couldn’t even get it together in time to enter. :AAAAAA:
Just started free* trials of Qobuz and Tidal. They both offer up to 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming. Even so, I think I prefer Qobuz's quality.
The drawback is that Qobuz does NOT HAVE LYRICS. This is a major drawback for me as a hearing impaired person and also a songwriter (I want to know for sure what the lyrics are)! Qobuz is slightly cheaper if you pay annually rather than monthly.
*free but you give them payment info and the subscription kicks in if you don't cancel
Have you listened to the entries for the #Fedivision contest yet? There are 72 entries this year, lots of talented Fediverse musicians to discover and follow, and lots of new music to enjoy!
If you’re using generative AI, you’re not a prompt engineer or an artist or even a collaborator—you’re a client. You’re trying to get the Entity That Generates Things to generate Things to your specific parameters.
Really appreciate how evocative @bittersweetdb track, "In the Wind" is for #Fedivision2024. It's got a kind of ethereal Mad Max vibe, with the otherwordly womp-y droning bass drum and trance-like vocals. Well done!
Welp unfortunately I have to refine my criteria if I ever hope to narrow down my list of #Fedivision2024 entries to vote for only 3.
First additional criteria will be the artist (composer/songwriter) needs to be actually present/active on the Fediverse. For me, one of the points is to strengthen community among #FediverseMusicians
Fedivision is a song contest among musical artists here on the Fediverse, in the spirit of Eurovision, but the countries are made up and there are no prizes for the winner, just bragging rights.
The entries just became public yesterday, so you have a whole week to listen and vote! https://fedivision.party/
I didn’t enter, but I have been enjoying listening to all the tracks and am having a hard time deciding which to vote for. You get 3 votes this year!
