The Valencia Corridor Merchants Association is calling for the center bikeway to be replaced with curbside protected bike lanes, which will be better for business, safer for people, and more effective at helping people shift trips from cars.

Streets are for people! Events on car-free streets, like tonight’s “Downtown First Thursdays” show the amazing life, community, and vibrancy that pedestrianization can bring to cities.

San Francisco should pedestrianize streets throughout the city, especially merchant corridors!

Merchants support pedestrianized streets and protected bike lanes once they’re implemented, because they increase revenue and improve the area around businesses.

We need leaders who will commit to a vision and have it implemented immediately, rather than drag things out forever.

Support the West Portal improvements in a few taps and less than a minute — now is the time for action, not committees and delays!

“Forming a committee is a classic tactic by opponents of improvements to delay, obstruct or kill efforts to improve a street or neighborhood. Placating opponents with this committee and delay continues the dangerous precedent of inaction [on transforming San Francisco’s streets]”

“‘It comes across as well-intentioned, but this is a classic delay tactic by people who oppose improvements,’ said Luke Bornheimer, an advocate who pushed for the [improvements]. He now fears the idea will be shipwrecked on the rocks of committee meetings and community feedback.”

I’m working on getting more information, but disappointed and frustrated to see Supervisor Melgar allowing opponents of the proposed improvements to delay action and implementation.

Creating committees and demanding data/studies is a classic delay tactic. This is not leadership.

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

Rather than approve and implement the proposed improvements — which would increase safety for all people, improve Muni speed and reliability, and make the West Portal area more accessible, welcoming, and vibrant — this delays substantive and effective action, potentially forever.

We know that these improvements would:

1️⃣ Increase safety for all people
2️⃣ Improve Muni speed and reliability
3️⃣ Increase accessibility for West Portal
4️⃣ Decrease car traffic and demand for parking
5️⃣ Decrease noise and air pollution

Delaying these improvements does nothing.

Creating committees and referring to them is a classic delay and interference tactic — it’s literally in the CIA’s “The Art of Simple Sabotage” Field Manual!

We need to take immediate action of roadway safety and transforming our streets — not create more committees and delay.

A car driver who purposefully drove 80+ mph on a street with a speed limit of 25 mph and killed a man walking in the crosswalk got the following, unacceptable sentence:

1️⃣ A few months in jail
2️⃣ Diversion program
3️⃣ $58,000 in restitution

And the street still isn’t redesigned.

Help get the West Portal improvements approved to increase safety for all people, improve Muni’s speed and reliability, and make the area more welcoming and enjoyable for people and businesses: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/approvewp/

You can help make these improvements a reality in a few taps!

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

After sending an email in support at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/approvewp/, please fill out SFMTA’s survey about the improvements at https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7807748/West-Portal-Project-All-Languages and be sure to answer “5 (strongly like)” for questions 1–6 to improve safety, vibrancy, liveliness, and transportation options for all.

And, if you haven’t already signed the original petition, please do that at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/westportal — there’s still time to support that campaign and advocate for transit-only lanes on West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street to 15th Avenue.

Please share the thread with your friends!

Allowing turns on red increases conflicts, crashes, and injuries/fatalities for all people — especially people walking and biking — and makes it more dangerous and uncomfortable to cross the street.

SFMTA should approve a citywide No Turn on Red policy ➡️ https://NTORsf.com

With the recent weak sentencings for car drivers who killed people with their cars, it seems like a great time to share this regular thought of mine:

If someone wanted to stop my advocacy, they could just hit and kill me — someone who primarily walks and bikes — with their car.

San Francisco Chronicle No jail time for S.F. driver who killed 4-year-old in crosswalk near Oracle Park By Nora Mishanec April 18, 2024

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

Shockingly and terrifyingly easy to kill with a car:

1️⃣ Hit someone with your car
2️⃣ Stay at the scene
3️⃣ Say you didn’t see the person or someone honked at you
4️⃣ Go home and sleep in your own bed
5️⃣ Get off with little to no punishment (and get to keep your drivers license!!!)

LukeBornheimer, to random
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

The sentencing and “punishment” for the car driver who killed a 4-year-old last year is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent for San Francisco and the rest of the country, suggesting killing someone with a car is a minor offense.

I’m glad to see that SFMTA is restarting parking enforcement for parking violations that decrease public safety and accessibility, like parking on sidewalks, in crosswalks and bike lanes and close to intersections.

“Through incentives and better street design, [San Francisco] can [become the bike-commuting capital of the country].”

“How can San Francisco […] become a more e-bike-friendly city? E-bike share, purchase subsidies and [a connected network of protected bike lanes].”

Yes, this!

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

E-bike incentive programs have proven to be wildly popular and incredibly effective at helping people shift trips away from cars (and stimulate local economies).

San Francisco should be establishing a (more inclusive and effective) e-bike incentive program to help with this now.
