Yesterday's anti-science bingo. Started with a discussion with a herbalist who admitted that she didn't know much about it, but that "the body says when it doesn't like something", "and 90% of illnesses are psychological, like covid", "I'm not vaccinated", "and now they're selling us an asymptomatic heatwave, the weather's fine, where do you see the heatwave?".

What do we do when false certainties are more reassuring than facts?

Enjoying the slowness of this Sunday morning to listen to the conversation between Katherine May and Marjolijn van Heemstra which echoes what I'm trying to do in the face of the climate crisis: protect spaces in my days for experiencing the wonder of the world around me (scientific communication is one approach for me), people, human creativity, choosing it consciously, despite everything.

This morning it rained for the first time in a long time. The rain smelt of burning wood. Is it possible that this is due to the fires in Canada? (I live in Luxembourg.) Will the smell of the rain change too?

This year I discovered persistent dizziness as a result of dehydration during the recent heatwave, which temporarily damaged my inner ear. I don't recommend it. And it makes me extremely anxious about what the future holds.

Last hand-stitching completed this morning (10 metres of bias binding, very slow, very meditative), very happy with this project. An excuse to use fabrics from my precious stash, in a project that I hope will be long-lasting.

Pattern: Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio
Liberty Fabrics: 'Betsy', 'Capel', 'Oxford' & 'Glencot House'

Finished this project (early) this morning as a gift for a friend, the first time I've quilted a larger piece, really enjoyed the process, including making the bias to match the main fabric and even doing all the finishing by hand so the jacket is reversible. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to sew the pockets, which is against my principles*.

Pattern: Tamarack Jacket (Grainline Studio)
Fabrics: Merchant & Mills, Liberty fabrics

Photo of a quilted jacket, the other side, in a blue-toned fabric. The seams are finished with a hand-sewn bias, which gives the jacket structure.
Photo of the process of quilting the pieces that make up the jacket (here the sleeves). The cotton fabrics are sandwiched around a batting fabric, pinned and held together with provisional hand stitches.

*"Someone clever once said
Women were not allowed pockets
In case they carried leaflets
To spread sedition
Which means unrest
To you & me
A grandiose word
For common sense
Fairness
Kindness
Equality
So ladies, start sewing
Dangerous coats
Made of pockets & sedition"

The joy of seeing the house martins and swifts flying around our flat, never tired of seeing them, their speed, their grace...
