I've never seen a cat tuck in their tail like this. :blobcatoverlycute:

Announcement: I have finally beaten Into the Breach with every squad on the hardest ("unfair") difficult level. I'm...not sure what to do with my time now.

MrDrumble,

@rebeccawatson Nice!

This might be my favorite game of all time. It's just so incredibly well designed and satisfying to master.

I've been told people on this website enjoy me trying to think through computer problems out loud while in incredible pain, so good news: I'm taking my new Thinkpad T14 (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111218408629532857) out of the box and I'm going to install Linux on it first thing. So expect a LOT of complaining.

MrDrumble,

@mcc This may be too late, but you can install Windows 11 without linking to an MS account quite easily.

I used this tool just a month ago to do so. Just need to point it to an official Windows 11 iso and it steps you through a few privacy options, including use a local account instead, before creating an installer on a USB stick. https://rufus.ie/en/

I've had no issues. Though I'd recommend grabbing Win 11 Pro so you can more easily remove a few more "features". (like a news widget you have little control over and is always running the background, even if "disabled")

MrDrumble,

@mcc I currently do not have it. The reason I found rufus in the first place was a botched Win10 update removed my install but I couldn't update to Win11 because I didn't meet the requirements for TPM 2.0. Rufus can bypass that requirement.

Been meaning to go back and see if I can enable that in my bios, this is a good reminder.

MrDrumble,

@mcc (I'm unclear if encryption could be enabled at that point, to be clear. I don't see why it wouldn't but I'm done assuming things about MS's way of doing things)

MrDrumble,

@mcc Ah, that does sound nasty. It sounds like you can make a local backup though, based on a quick search: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/use-bitlocker-encryption-in-windows-11/

My Trump worshipping, confederate flag flying neighbor just put a For Sale sign out in front of their house and I am SO HAPPY. :ablobcatrave:

Turns out you can use Windows Firewall to disable Internet access for specific programs, like Windows 11's Solitaire collection. Then you no longer have to watch video ads before every new game. Even the ad images on the side just become solitaire logos.

Time to party like it's Windows 95.

MrDrumble,

@sladewatkins You can!

-Open Windows Firewall, click Advanced Settings on the left.
-Click Outbound Rules -> New Rule -> This program path* (click browse and select it)
-Block this connection
-Check all, click next
-Name the rule whatever

*I did two rules, one at %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_4.17.8180.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection.exe and Solitaire.exe

You might need to enable the show hidden folders option to browse to them.

Are there any Mastodon clients that display your timeline oldest first?

I've increasingly come to question the newest first social media standard. Starting with the oldest new message first and scrolling down from there sounds lovely.

MrDrumble,

@RxBrad Strangely, Tusky seems to have an "oldest first" setting, but its just a very poorly worded label for another feature. Nice app though, I may keep it anyway.

Is there no free way to test a website in Safari without an Apple device? Seems bafflingly but true so far. The Windows version was discontinued years ago.

MrDrumble,

@Gwellin I'm unfortunately getting reports of drastic differences, like buttons not working.

All the online test suites I've found that sound accurate seem to have high, yearly rates and free trials that last absurdly short times (1 min?!)

MrDrumble,

I have a lead on an iPod Touch. 🎉

finished watching the new show based on his dark materials, and wow, it was so good!

it's wild to think back to when i first read those books! i think i was like... 14? definitely a formative story for me, and it hits just as hard as an adult...

MrDrumble,

@NinaMarie oh, I hadn't even heard about this. Excited to go track it down!

Strive to be so anti-social that when you start parking inside your garage instead of in your driveway your neighbours call the cops to check on your dogs, assuming that you've died.

True story.

Getting a weirdly needy vibe from clearing Gley Lancer's highest difficulty....

MrDrumble, to Help

This is a real shot in the dark, but I've been looking for a very specific kind of off and on for years and I haven't found one yet, so....

My requirements:
-a physical object I have to get off my ass to turn off.
-it must have a silent alarm mode. (ie flashing lights, blinking display, etc)
-it must be easy to set a ~45min timer (ie not pressing a button 45 times)
-the alarm must not turn itself off quickly (at least 5 mins, but more is better)

The last one is the tricky part. Everything stops after a minute! 😭

One upside to all the social media upheaval is it's gotten me back into feeds in a big way.

RSS has a lot in common philosophically with the . Makes me think of what might have been... and what yet may be.

MrDrumble,

@blhue I am very picky about my feed's layout, and ended up using Inoreader cause I like their cards view a bit better than Feedly's.

Trying to curb the desire to make my own reader exactly how I like it.

Writing this down because I keep forgetting it and posts are easy to search for:

  • Vitamin B2 is the one believed to be beneficial in the treatment of migraines.

  • Vitamin B6 is the one that is long-term dangerous and which most B complexes contain in dangerous quantities.

MrDrumble,

@mcc Too much B6 and you'll B6 feet under.

i'm only poking around here AGAIN because there's jack shit to read on twitter when things aren't loading.
tumblr's been better for fandom stuff anyway from what i've seen, it's still dire here

MrDrumble,

@kariohki Have you tried following hashtags on here? That seems to be the best way to find communities.
