What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I’m just wasting away my time here. It’s actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can’t really afford to spent money on it every day....

MrsDoyle,

Look for volunteer opportunities. In my town I found a litter-picking group that met once a week. Then through members of that group I joined another one that maintains flower beds and planters around the town. Then joined an effort to rehabilitate an environment project on a nearby farm, and ended up in the beekeeping team. Another group I was in for a few years organises gentle walks for elderly folks. I learned a huge amount from all these things, and none of it cost me anything but time.

MrsDoyle,

Both sides have elevators. One side also has the bridge lift, the mechanism that raises the central bridge to let ships through.

MrsDoyle,

Some uk supermarkets have started dropping the use by date in favour of codes like this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45786012 The article says it’s to reduce waste and that staff will have special training to know when to bin stuff. I imagine the training is in how to read the codes.

MrsDoyle,

Hey, leave us boomers out of it! I love being able to pay with my phone. No more carting around a handbag, stick my phone in my pocket and I’m good to go. I can buy stuff, read a book, chat with friends, listen to music and podcasts… brilliant.

MrsDoyle,

I went psst psssst pssst to a cute cat in a garden I was passing, not noticing a woman walking towards me. She thought I was hissing at her, gave me such a LOOK. She was wearing hijab, I’m an old lady, who knows what was going through her head.

No dopamine for me that day.

MrsDoyle,

Licence plate: “Boy & dog”.

"The officer chose to write him a warning and ask him to take the animal back home and leave the city.”

So much to enjoy in this story.

MrsDoyle,

My sister’s absence seizures turned out to be stage four brain cancer. I know he’s an arsehole, but doesn’t he have anyone looking out for him? At all? He needs help.

MrsDoyle,

From Wiki: “In 1819, at the age of 72, Goya moved into a two-story house outside Madrid that was called Quinta del Sordo (Deaf Man’s Villa). Although the house had been named after the previous owner, who was deaf, Goya too was nearly deaf at the time as a result of an unknown illness he had suffered when he was 46.”

I’ve seen these paintings and had no idea about any of this. I also want more weird art history facts.

MrsDoyle,

Unbelievably, the hieroglyph next to the bird is a bee. It’s like whoever designed it had never seen a bee, but had them described by someone who knew someone whose cousin was stung by a bee that one time.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee_(hieroglyph)

MrsDoyle,

I grew up in NZ - we used to spray fake snow on the windows at Christmas and send cards with winter scenes, reindeer, robins, all that. On the day we’d have a big meal topped off with plum pudding. Bloody ridiculous.

MrsDoyle,

Consider this: a million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years. It really helps me understand just how obscenely wealthy these people are, how much money they are hoarding. They’re leeches.

MrsDoyle,

I had an ex boyfriend I’d stayed in touch with phone me to say he was now a Christian and part of his new-found faith was contacting people he’d treated badly in the past and apologising. So, he realised now that he had not been a good friend, and he was very sorry for any hurt he’d caused me. I accepted the apology and we chatted a bit.

A few weeks later he called again, this time to ask me to sign an affidavit affirming that he was a good person and had been a good friend to me. This was to support his effort to gain custody of a baby, who may or may not have been his, from his most recent ex, along with her two sons, who definitely weren’t. I said absolutely NOT and told him why. He hung up, and I haven’t heard from him since. Such a great friend, lol.

MrsDoyle,

Mariolatry!

That link is actually a pretty wild ride. Excerpt: “Father Jerome of Texo, of the Society of Jesus, rejoiced in the name of slave of Mary; and, as a mark of servitude, went often to visit her in some church dedicated in her honor. On reaching the church, he poured out abundant tears of tenderness and love for Mary; then prostrating, he licked and rubbed the pavement with his tongue and face, kissing it a thousand times, because it was the house of his beloved Lady”.

MrsDoyle,

Old lady here - I was the first woman in my role in a couple of jobs back in the 80s and was accused of being a token plenty of times. Had to slog my way uphill through a mountain of sexist shit every single day while seeing men cruise along because they played golf with someone high up.

How is all this connected to this saga? (lemmy.whynotdrs.org)

My brain is about to explode. Went down the rabbit hole. Pretty deep down there. Someone from “another place” sent me over to this guy’s site who is either a freaking genius or absolutely insane. But damn does it start to make these tweets these psst couple of years start to mean something....

MrsDoyle,

It’s not “information”, it’s the ramblings of a person suffering some kind of psychosis, maybe paranoid schizophrenia. My advice is to turn off your computer and go for a walk in nature. The patterns you’ll see out there - trunks, branches, twigs - are real and wholesome. Take your shoes off and feel the earth even.

MrsDoyle,

My theory is that you fell asleep on the plane and dreamt this whole story. You should write up the screenplay and get that movie made. Better yet, make it a movie within a movie, about someone haunted by a movie they vaguely remember having seen on a plane, but it turns out it was all a dream. So they write up the screenplay and get the movie made…

MrsDoyle,

I’d like to apply to be your sister-in-law please.

What a wonderful table, and I admire the amount of care and thought you put in to the construction.

MrsDoyle,

Some of the churches where I live have a big banner outside that says, “Try praying”. It strikes me as comically desperate. Imagine a car dealership with a “Try driving” banner, a restaurant with “Try eating”.

MrsDoyle,

Amazon gets these dumb answers because it emails buyers with the questions. So Joe Blow gets an email saying, “will this fit my XYZ?” and he answers, “I don’t know, but it works ok on my ABC”. It makes the Q&A section mostly useless.

MrsDoyle,

Yes, I use Bing. I got sick of Google’s ads, not to mention having to click through two pages of useless boosted links. Bing is quicker and cleaner.

MrsDoyle,

My father, a union organiser: “You can love the company all you like, but the company will never love you back.”

Stood me in good stead down the years.

I started pirating movies again after a decade

I was a happy Netflix user until 2018, before that I haven’t really pirated any movies (with very rare exceptions) for almost a decade but I recently started again. I’m was doing my monthly budgeting and realized I was paying for too many subscription services. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Shudder, Disney+, Hulu and Crunchyroll....

MrsDoyle,

I feel like I must be the only person in the world still still using Piratebay! I switch between that and Kickass Torrents and have done for years. They’ve been through a variety of guises but seem to have settled down now. I use Tixati to leech and seed, never used a VPN and never had any trouble from my ISPs. It’s been interesting reading the comments though, might look at some of the suggestions.

Sock blankets (sh.itjust.works)

Thrilled to have found a Lemmy knitting group! I'm a sock obsessive, I just love knitting socks, so I've ended up with an staggering amount of "scrap" yarn. The solution - blankets. This is my second Cosiest Memories project and this time I have a Plan. The first one was truly random, with lots of placement errors. When it was...
