Pentapod, to gamedev

I rewatched the first (Season 1, ep. 1) last night and just for the heck of it, here is a thread of the highlights of what struck me (a 16 year veteran of making MMORPGs and RPGs) as both realistic and clearly unrealistic.

Pentapod,

👎Team size: while it's sort of handwaved that there's a lot more team than we see on the floors we ever visit in the show ("the dev team heads are here"), we NEVER see them and Ian and Poppy are implied to make/own all the content. This game needs dozens more both designers & programmers at least.

Pentapod,

👍Creative Director: characterization of Ian as the "big ideas guy" with an ego the size of Texas is so painfully accurate to some I have met/worked for that it was physically painful to watch this the first time. Yes he's a parody of that toxic type, but not so much of a parody as one would wish.

Pentapod,

👎Blood: there is red blood splashing around. Many countries (e.g. Germany) have super strict laws, showing red blood would mean this game would require it to have an age 18+ restriction. But Pootie Shoe is 14. Also I cannot imagine they'd actually cut out all under 18 players just to make blood red.

Pentapod,

👍Pootie Shoe: sadly, this is super realistic. Okay, he's a slight parody but not exaggerated as much as you'd hope. I LOL'd when he was first introduced. Name is clearly a play on real streamer Pewdiepie, and yes marketing and leadership would definitely watch key streamers to see how they react.

Pentapod,

👎"1 continent, over 1000 playable items": this is how Poppy describes the expansion. What are "playable items"? If she means equippable items like armor and weapons then 1000 is a tiny number and not at all impressive. 1000 new quests would seem realistic, but "playable items" makes no sense.

Pentapod,

👍 Brad: again, he's an exaggerated stereotype but not nearly as exaggerated as you might think. Everyone who's worked on a monetized game for any length of time has probably met a Brad. He's so terrible but so real that I love him for it. He is Monetization Guy distilled. 10/10 characterization.

Pentapod,

👎 Digging: "change the landscape of the game." This is NOT something you could introduce by just adding a shovel. You would need to completely re-engineer the way the terrain is created, if it wasn't diggable before and now is. And has massive ramifications on bandwidth. COMPLETELY unbelievable.

This please enjoy a photo of Roger, correctly detecting that the last thing this insulated bag carried was shrimp dim sum, and determined to investigate further.

: This is very helpful with the typing. Not distracting at all. Providing chin skritches is clearly productive, valuable work.

Great read! I hadn’t come across this before. Sometimes you know a thing, and do a thing, without having clearly defined or put into words what you’re intuitively doing.

Pentapod,

@Sharan Smart, yeah! Reduced chance is not the same as no chance, and infection rates in the UK are hugely high right now. 😢

Pentapod,

@Sharan ugh! Hope so for your sake but the odds are not good! 😩 Good luck with the flat though. You’ll have to re-watch “The Full Monty” if you move to Sheffield! 😃

elana, to random

Today is our eighth wedding anniversary and we’ve gotten a lot of kind wishes from friends and family, which is SO WEIRD to me. Why are other people congratulating us on our marriage? Why are they even aware or interested? Isn’t our romance just between us? Am I the weird one for feeling this way?

I also find weddings generally vulgar and voyeuristic so I know I’m a bit of an outlier 😂

Pentapod,

@IPEdmonton @elana Technically I did make you a cake to celebrate the occasion! The cake congratulated you, at least… 😂

Pentapod,

@elana On the original topic is it maybe an American thing? I never paid much attention to wedding anniversaries, even my parents didn’t make a big deal about it. But when I lived in the US I noticed a lot of people seemed to send cards and things, especially if they attended the wedding? 🤷🏻‍♀️. Definitely seems like two distinctly different attitude groups.

Pentapod,

@elana Mayyybe, but I think IPEdmonton's family is in the states so unless they're really opposed to her partner for some reason that might disprove the American theory? It could be a partial explanation though, maybe particular regions anyway.

: Excited to be back to work today! But while the holiday break was relaxing and recharging for ME, apparently it was quite exhausting for my coworker, who seems very glad to be back to her regular desk support role providing moral support and napping 😄

Pentapod, (edited ) to RabbitHole

The first day of 2024's unexpected rabbit hole is "Who Wrote Caramelldansen", because a car passed me last weekend blasting that song out the window and, well, who doesn't like Caramelldansen? But even considering I've been around memes since before memes were a thing anybody knew about*, I was still surprised how complicated the story is... https://youtu.be/rI3yD3WAcz4?si=Ooe-CI6ieqKcpkjS #CaramellDansen #HappyNewYear #RabbitHole

  • (probably 1989, when I first read Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene" which coined the term)
Pentapod,

"Maybe in a sense the Caramella Girls are the modern incarnation of Caramell. They've just been Ship-of-Theseused into a lineup that no longer has any of their original members.

Except it's not really like the Ship of Theseus. It's more like if you were to disassemble a ship one piece at a time, but instead of replacing those parts as you take them out, the ship is just left without those parts, and eventually, the ship is completely gone...."

Pentapod,

"...But then a few years later, a song created by the Ship of Theseus becomes a big meme in Japan, and in response, the guy who owns the rights to the Ship of Theseus, who is not Theseus, decides to make a new ship, the Thesea Girls, in order to appeal to this demographic that enjoys works made by this old ship that no longer exists"

My daughter is recovering from . Symptoms are mostly gone and she just tested negative. She wants to work tomorrow wearing a surgical mask; she hates N95s.
I think she needs to test negative again after 48 hrs before she goes out, or at least wear an N95 for a few days.
I also think she needs to take it easy or she risks permanent damage. She doesn't want to hear this from me.
Is there a good guide to recovering safely that reflects the science that I can refer her to?
