The Brits are all talking about warnings not to eat a whole Easter egg in one sitting, and I am 🧐 about this, because in my dialect an “Easter egg” is a hard-boiled chicken egg that has been dyed pretty colours, usually by children, from those little kits we used to buy at the supermarket (do they still sell those? With the tablets dissolved in vinegar?). And I have eaten one of those in one sitting MANY TIMES, including as a young child.

What on earth is an “Easter egg” to the Brits?

@IPEdmonton I suspect they mean the big hollow chocolate eggs filled with smaller chocolate eggs. My mother (raised in Britain) always got one at easter (though we also hunted for easter baskets of the smaller kind).

My mom had surgery today to try to rescue one of her eyes from a cataract. (The other eye is a lost cause after a different surgeon absolutely beefed a different surgery and called it a fluke. Don’t worry, I have cursed that doctor with my mind) So far we can’t tell if it worked, because her vision will be blurry for a little while. J-M has been on edge about it all day because he is the sweetest man alive 🥰 my mom is in good spirits so far. I daren’t discuss the other lurking threat from availing oneself of health care services in 2024 because it is too fucking upsetting to contemplate

Feeling like an idiot because coming back from vet on Friday, short of sleep, super worried by sick cat, and late for an appointment, as I hurried back to my condo from underground parking carrying my poor cat I completely blanked and didn’t realize I’d forgotten to put my mask back on till I was at my door. Parking and hallways are pretty well ventilated, but elevator? Absolutely no way to know. 😬 Now hunting for rapid test kit brand ratings in case sniffles aren’t just snow mold allergies. ☹️

@IPEdmonton yeah I’m thinking it should be pretty low risk, but nonetheless every time I sneeze 😬

Also I’m surprised there aren’t more recommendation lists of rapid test brands the way there are for masks, CO2 monitors, air filters… almost everything else in fact. Surprising lack.

@Sharan Yeah, the elevator was empty, but covid virus is spread in aerosols, which are tiny enough particles they can hang around in the air for up to a few hours if there isn't good ventilation (which, in an old elevator, there surely isn't). Like cigarette smoke. So hopefully nobody infectious was in there before me, but if they were, I was still breathing it. 🤞

Been thinking about moving on and off for a while, and I feel like we’re only here for another 2-4 years.

Housing prices in Portland no longer makes moving in-town a whole lot of sense. Family are in Hawaii and California, which also feels too expensive. Medical needs make staying near a large city or town a necessity. Being Covid-aware also necessitates a community where we won’t be harassed constantly.

Maybe somewhere in the Puget Sound area? Canada? Willing to hear any suggestions.

@parkerd heh yes, if California and Hawaii are more your experience it might be a shock… on the other hand it IS one of the sunniest cities in Canada if sun > cold 🙂

@IPEdmonton A friend of mine (@Pseusue) mentioned there’s a German researcher called Perikles Simon doing some interesting research on #LongCovid & post-exertional malaise, and since you are fluent I wondered if by chance you’ve come across it and know how faithful the English translations of his videos/papers are? The English versions look interesting.

Made another birthday cake for my favourite geologist. Not quite what I was planning, but I think I made it work okay.

Two layers are visible, covered with dirt-brown frosting, but separated to reveal a central section which is inset slightly and is filled with lighter brown chunks of “rock” (actually broken up Skor toffee chunks). The lower layer has some white fossil bones poking through the “dirt” (molded in white chocolate).
Close up of the brownie “geodes” on the top. They are concave hemispheres with a hard grey shell on the outside (white chocolate with some black food colouring), the middle is filled with lighter yellow dried pineapple “crystals” and the outer “crystals” are dried apricot. Edible gold powder dusts the edges.

This has been a pretty terrible week on the whole between Pansy getting a bladder infection and needing many expensive tests, and me managing to do something in my sleep that made me so dizzy I threw up more than once due to motion sickness. 😩 On top of work and house hunting deadlines. So for here is Pansy expressing how we both feel this week! Both starting to feel a bit better today I hope.

@AmeliasBrain @IPEdmonton No dizziness this morning so maybe it was muscle-related in some way? I do so love this “injure yourself in your sleep” feature of getting older 😩 I’m sure the added stress this week didn’t help. Hoping it does not return!
