It is impossible to support what has been and is doing in unless you believe at some level that Israelis are more deserving of safety and security than Palestinians.
This is true regardless of whether you believe Israel's actions constitute or .
There is no way to justify Israel's conduct that is not racist and xenophobic.
If this post offends you, I suggest you spend a good long time thinking about why.

@jik@federate.social avatar

I am taking a today between Kansas City and St. Louis. It's been so long that I can't remember the last time I took an intercity bus. It hasn't changed a bit.
Most notably, it appears to still be true that the people on buses are mostly the people who can't afford to fly.
(Yes, I know, it's a generalization based on appearances. Don't come into my mentions harassing me about it unless you've ridden a Greyhound for several hours and seen it for yourself.)

jik,
@jik@federate.social avatar

It's still a combination of perfectly decent, nice people, rude people, and people who seem to have something not quite right in the head. The latter category continues to seemingly be overrepresented on buses compared to other forms of transit.
Definitely a much higher percentage of BIPOC, especially immigrants, compared to flying.
(One wonders if this is in part due to the fact that undocumented immigrants can't get the ID they would need to fly.)

I just had a conversation with a guy who said, “Yeah, well I’m a capitalist.”

So I asked, “Okay, how much capital do you have?”

Boy, oh boy, does that question put things in perspective. He became a caricature of an old Warner Brothers cartoon character, trying to compose himself as he fumbled for words, all while he avoided actually answering the question.

So I simply repeated the question. I highly recommend.

Let's talk briefly about what a tire-fire is and why you shouldn't buy from them.
I attempted to order COVID tests from them near the start of the pandemic. They sold more than they had, I never received the tests I ordered, and cancelling the order was a nightmare.
But then they started spamming me.
In 2022 I unsubscribed from their .

In February 2024 I asked them to delete my account (created only to order the COVID tests).
They just spammed me again.
When I click the unsub link, the page it takes me to claims I'm already unsubscribed.
In addition to all this you're probably aware they've had numerous security and privacy issues with their products.
You really, really shouldn't patronize this company.

    @AIBrain @jonah @doomy @protonprivacy 1) If the hash isn't one-way then Proton can be compelled to unhash it so there's no point.
    2) They could require the user to reenter the recovery address if it's needed for recovery, confirm that it matches the hash, send the recovery message to the address, and then discard the unhashed address.
    If they're not doing it that way then they screwed up, or they decided convenience outweighs privacy, or they want to be able to cough it up if asked legally. 🤷

    jik,
    @jik@federate.social avatar

    @jonah @AIBrain @doomy @protonprivacy In fact, people are significantly more likely to forget a password than to forget their email address.
    And if they have multiple addresses and don't remember which they used, they can try all of them.
    As I said, this is a privacy vs. convenience trade-off.
    Other apps do this (require recovery email to be verified by user before it can be used for recovery). Proton would not be breaking new ground here.

    jik,
    @jik@federate.social avatar

    @protonprivacy @jonah @AIBrain @doomy I don't understand why you keep making excuses instead of at least acknowledging that you could choose to handle recovery emails in a way that keeps them private.

    If your reaction to your leader having incontinence issues and wearing adult diapers is to start wearing adult diapers yourself, even though you don't need them, and bragging about it, you're probably in a cult.
    (This is not a criticism of people, including , wearing adult diapers if they need them. Making fun of people with incontinence issues is despicable. This is about the over-the-top reaction of his acolytes to learning that he wears them.)

    Seriously, though, there are only two choices to avoid chaos: either we embark on public works projects on a massively unprecedented scale to keep the water out of coastal areas, or we spend massive amounts of money to buy out the people on the coasts and relocate them inland, with the clear stipulation that anyone who refuses to be relocated can't get insurance and can't get any help from the government when their property is flooded.
    We probably won't do either until it's too late.

    jik, to politics
    @jik@federate.social avatar

    The fundamental flaw of well-meaning politicians who have the right values and want to do the right thing is that the longer they serve, the more most of them come to fear chaos more than the injustice that drove them to politics.
    This leads to 2 things: they're slow to recognize dramatic changes in the status quo, and they instinctively defend the status quo against such changes.
    is a perfect example of this, as demonstrated by his recent speech about .

    jik,
    @jik@federate.social avatar

    The normalization of by well-meaning politicians* all over the world is another example of this. The push to "return to normal" was driven by the fundamental belief that order is preferable to chaos because it is easier to govern and makes it easier to predict future outcomes.
    Career politicians Get Shit Done, as Biden definitely has. But this is their Achilles' heel.

    *I know there are many folks who don't believe they're well-meaning. I think some, like Biden, are. 🤷

    P.S. You bet your ass I'll be voting for Biden in November despite the missteps I believe he's made on COVID, Gaza, and plenty of other stuff.
    Because it's going to be either Biden or a fascist in the White House come January 2025, and Biden's at least trying to do the right thing, and, in many areas, succeeding.

    I don't know who needs to hear this*, but when you're washing dishes, you need to wash all the surfaces of every dish. The top and bottom of the plate, the inside and outside of the pot, the tines and handle of the fork, etc.
    Grease and germs get everywhere. You can't see or feel them when the dish is wet. washing just the parts you think came into contact with food means you're leaving the dish dirty.

    *Narrator: he knows exactly who needs to hear this.

    jik,
    @jik@federate.social avatar

    If you're running the water while you're washing the dishes, then (a) you're wasting a huge amount of water and (b) you're washing away the soap before it has a chance to lift the grease from the dish. So you're wasting soap and your dishes aren't getting clean.
