If we liked capitalism, we’d still using Reddit

PopOfAfrica,

Not exactly a tablet, but Ive been using an old Thinkpad Yoga for Krita with its built in wacom pen. Got it used for like $150

PopOfAfrica,

Who still uses Google Play? Use FDroid please.

PopOfAfrica,

The way steam reviews work is a pure recommend or do not recommend syatem.

Its more accurate GBE say ow2 is the least recommended game of all time, not the worst

PopOfAfrica, (edited )

The trick is the work in academia, where there is always someone smarter than you.

PopOfAfrica,

I don’t think this post is a defence of China, its a damning of the invasive governments, which the US also has.

It’s a warning that we are one step away from China, and should do something about it.

PopOfAfrica,

Krita is fantastic but not exactly a full photo editing suite. It’s more for illustration. Gimp is some of the worst FOSS software I’ve ever used. I wish someone would fork Krita into a full editor.

PopOfAfrica,

It means that, because the reddit version was open source, some completely different Dev was able to take it and rework it to work with lemmy

PopOfAfrica,

I think a lot of you are confusing privacy focused to elitism.

No data should ever go to a google server from Lemmy app ever.

A lot of people seem to think the issue is that’s he’s charging for it.

PopOfAfrica,

The problem isnt that its paid, it’s that they use google AdSense.

I do not trust a Dev willing to send my data through Google servers.

PopOfAfrica, (edited )

Well, I don’t use it.

But in regards to the payment, Why on earth would I pay a Dev who thinks using Google servers for ads is a good idea?

That’s just bad judgement

PopOfAfrica,

I’m am saying it is objectively bad thing for an app to run through google servers

PopOfAfrica,

Good thing I’m running Graphene OS then

PopOfAfrica,

And Im saying it is objectively a bad one.

If you want to keep touching the hot stove, all power to you. Nobody is going to argue it’s not a bad choice to touch a hot stove though

PopOfAfrica,

The sad part is Sync will likely kill in way more money than the instances we run on.

PopOfAfrica,

I doubt anyone who says this has donated to their Lemmy instance.

The truth is, humans try to justify their purchases. You didn’t want to pau for Sync, you would have happily used it for free.

You want to feel good for having paid for Sync.

PopOfAfrica,

I’m fairness, FOSS development is not as expensive. You usually are basing your work on previous libraries. Everyone builds off each other so nobody has to do it alone. That’s FOSS

PopOfAfrica,

My qualms about proprietary software is due to privacy, not cost.

I don’t feel superior for using FOSS, I feel more secure (and usually am)

PopOfAfrica,

I mean you have yo question how much the guy values privacy if he even considered Google ads as a monetization model.

PopOfAfrica,

Graphene Os, although I’d love to move to Post market OS and Plasma Mobile once it’s ready

PopOfAfrica,

I knew Lemmy was ready when It had an active politics Mega thread the other week.

PopOfAfrica,

If you aren’t ignorant, than you are stupid.

You know the stove is hot and are showing your palm into it. That isn’t ignorance.

Most mankind is ignorant to data privacy, and that says nothing to their intellect.

PopOfAfrica,

See, you are trying to debate whether the stove top is hot or not.

I’m not going to debate that because its quite apparent what these companies, and by extensions governments, do with this data.

You are allowed to touch a hot stove. You are not allowed to debate whether or not it’s hot.

Like I said, touch that stove, knowing it’s hot if you want, I can’t stop you.

PopOfAfrica,

That’s why it’s imperative that the app which communicates with the server via Lemmy’s api, IS open and auditable. That’s how we prevent maligned actors from using data they shouldn’t have. You can audit what is being sent from an open source app.

PopOfAfrica,

Let’s break it down this way. Let’s look at incentive structure’s.

An Open Source application can be forked, and has no incentive to use data in a maligned way.

A closed one can earn tons of money by doing just that.

As I argue with most things, Capitalism is the main issue and it permeates through all facets of life by having backwards incentive structures
