For audio editing, would this have any advantages over Audacity, which is what I use?: LosslessCut - swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing - LinuxLinks https://www.linuxlinks.com/losslesscut-swiss-army-knife-of-lossless-video-audio-editing/

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrideOfLinux

If you're re-arranging audio/video without doing anything to the audio itself (like amplification, dynamic range compression, noise reduction), it has the advantage of not having to decompress/recompress the audio/video which can introduce more artifacts.

Seems like a very neat project. Unfortunately, 90% of what I do in Audacity is dynamic range compression, so it's a moot point for me.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrideOfLinux

Sure thing! Being able to rearrange A/V without having to decode/reencode it is really neat, though. They deserve major props for what they've been able to accomplish so far.

I'd love to see audio editing that happens purely in the frequency domain. It would be almost like lossless editing, as (AFAIK) you'd be tweaking the already-lossy-compreased values, rather than decode -> edit -> encode.

I'd love to see an editor smart enough to edit a compresses audio stream directly…

@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrideOfLinux

...but I know that's a BIG ask, and would require extensive research and re-writing to support more than one codec.

This right here is why I consider Ubuntu the "microsoft of Linux"
Ubuntu is a terrible excuse for a server OS, and ads have no place in tools like apt. Literally taking an upstream tool from Debian and adding ads to it.

Regardless of any amount of insistence to the contrary, is becoming enshittified. They just have a little bit of self-awareness -- that's the only reason why it isn't more extreme.

I quite like the shiny metal and black combo on watches it seems. I just switched over from the one on the right to the one on the left and while they are very different watches there are also some similarities. 😉

Silver tone analog style watch with a black, backwards running face and a black leather strap with white stitching.

In light of the Creative Commons deciding that AI scraping/training is "fair use" I think I'm going to just repost @Jess_Alter's post on this:
https://ko-fi.com/post/LLMs-and-the-Theft-of-Intellectual-Property-C0C0UOKT8

I think it covers it.
Especially when you look at the fields of writing and art being clearcut right now by AI-wielding corps.

Rather than having our back, Creative Commons is siding with the likes of Disney, Meta, and Google.

I can't express how great it is that we still have text based web browsers, they can be life savior when shit happens and for whatever reason Xorg can't start up, because they can be used on the TTY too.
Today I have this exact scenario when I had no other way to look up what could be my problem. I'm glad I have at least one of them installed on my systems.

RL_Dane,

I default to text-based browsers like w3m and links on slower machines. It's so nice to just get the info I need without having to wade through megabytes of crappy JS.

I'm a solid MEH.

It's NOT a terrible init system at all.

Having all of userspace under a single banner run by some arrogant microsnot employee?
Count me out.

Also, repeat after me: Millions of lines of unaudited code. Running the entire internet.
Yay.

But yeah, I use it. Again, not a bad init system, TBH, I just don't like the tacit aspirations of world-userspace-domination.

The advantage of a relatively simple system like is that you have a good chance to understand it.

The advantage of a turnkey system like Fedora, Ubuntu, or Debian, is that you can get away without understanding it.

What was it like back then? Was Mastodon even a thing, or was it just GNU Social?

I know most of the crew at @tuxjam were on the fedi for a very long time, going all the way back to the identi.ca days.

Fun read!

I can't remember my first experience with emulation, but I remember hearing about software for early macs that would let you run DOS without any extra hardware, and that sounded like total magic to me.

My first emulator was probably something like NESticle, but I can't remember.
