They’ve been around forever, which is where my pessimism comes from. I’ve personally suffered and even had to pass up a job due to a non-compete. I’m not going to court to prove a point, which means employers have much more power than workers.
This was the advice I received when I consulted a lawyer on my non-compete. She said “I mean, you could go for it, but if they do call you on it, you’ll either owe the wages from your new organization, or you’ll have to take them to court and that’ll likely take a year or legal fees. You have to ask yourself if that’s worth it to you and your family.”

A good read and the principles hold for a lot of hobbies. Lots of small projects are more fun, more engaging, and better skill-building experiences than learning how to make a masterpiece from the get-go (woodworking example: a perfect cherry chest of drawers with all wood joinery and a french polish finish.)
Good thing you checked, that’s ridiculous. If I’d cut a dado for some mixed stock and found out some of them were 1 & 1/3 instead of 1 & 1/2, I’d be pissed.
I made a work bench with oak 4x4s for legs and dado’d in pine 2x4s for the cross braces. Nice and sturdy with a good enough fit and no movement I noticed over the past 3 years.

I think what you’re driving at is partially true: for perfect security, it takes a lot of effort and you never know when there’s a zero day for your particular practice.
However, like the other commenter is saying, it’s easy to have better security than most. Heck, it don’t even require extra ongoing maintenance to have a healthy security coverage.
But not doing anything to increase your security is a bad choice. To me, it’s kind of like eating vegetables, if the average person would just do it a little more, we would all benefit.

Knew a pastor who this happened to. He was adamant that he was part Native American. After a DNA test it turned out he was zero percent Native American.
