‘Astronomical’ warming in Nunavut forecasts temperatures above zero next week

“If we’re looking at what our normal temperatures would be on Monday, that’s maybe 30 degrees above normal ...”

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi reportedly tells Verkhovna Rada deputies in a closed session that the country is running out of soldiers and that the deputies themselves should enlist for combat. (Sounds more like a political speech than military strategy.)

RichThompsonAK,

@kevinrothrock Funny that things are going so well in Russia that Putin has no qualms about recruiting the worst that Russian prisons have to offer while things are so bad in Ukraine that Zaluzhny rejects the idea out of hand.

No such thing as a free lunch.

As U.S. prepares to claim new ocean territory off Arctic Alaska and in Bering Sea, there’s a catch

"The U.S. Senate has not ratified the... treaty under which such claims are adjudicated."

Random note: It looks like we're having the aforementioned "blizzard that didn't happen" on the installment plan. Snow and wind this morning. Then a little light rain. Then sunshine. Now snow and some wind again. I don't actually like shoveling snow, especially repeatedly, on a 12 hr cycle. Oh well.

The recent mild weather in Southwest Alaska has melted what little snow there was at low elevations in the upper Bristol Bay region. Webcam images courtesy FAA.

RichThompsonAK,

@AlaskaWx @Climatologist49 The local mountains aren't doing well for snow either. This photo was taken on 11/20. That's Warehouse Mtn (closer to Aleknagik) on the right. The bits through the center and left are over nearer Manokotak and towards Togiak.

In the first nine months of 2023, Russian state companies and agencies spent 1.06 billion rubles ($11.3 million) on safety guards against drone attacks, according to a new Agentstvo report. That’s 6x more than in 2022 and 49x more than in 2021.

Protecting the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant alone has cost Rosatom 348.7 million rubles ($3.7 million), and it’s almost 125 miles from the Ukrainian border.

RichThompsonAK,

@kevinrothrock Interesting. The price of projection or simply a guilty mind? Has Ukraine ever threatened, hinted at, or suggested someone should attack a Russian nuclear plant?

RichThompsonAK,

@kevinrothrock Reuters has seen better days. USNWR had better, and less dramatic, information.

Reminder: Elon Musk intentionally shut down Starlink operations near Crimea last year to undermine Ukrainian naval drones

His decision came from calls with Putin

Why are my tax dollars making this man a billionaire?

Why is he allowed to openly collude with war criminals without the gov’t nationalizing starlink / SpaceX?

Why is he still receiving DoD contracts?

And why are wine mommies with 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️ in their bio on Twitter?
