Unite (the union) is lobbying Labour to row back on pledge of no new North Sea oil & gas licenses…

Genuinely interested to hear what people think of this…

I trained in climate science, and now work for a union (formerly and soon to be back in an energy sector union), so I have very strong and possibly conflicting views on the subject!

Tell me your wildest thoughts on workers’ protections in the energy transition. You probably can’t shock me…

@drandrewv2 I used to be a mudlogger on the rigs, now I run a rope access company that provides maintenance services to the wind energy industry. The writing has been on the wall for a couple of decades that change was on the way and plenty of people I know that worked in extractives have either made the jump or are keen to make the jump to renewables. Honestly trying to delay the inevitable when the consequences of climate change are at stake is a really bad look for Unite and pretty bad for the credibility of organised labour in general. Advocating for a just transition, retraining and maximising retention of transferable skills (of which there are many) is not just the right thing to do, but also essential for the continued security of energy supply. We operate as a co-op and have had no problem bringing level 3 rope techs across from offshore NDT or blast and paint to equivalent roles on windfarms, folks are very keen to future proof their skill sets and earning potential.

One of our best high volume canyons is under threat!
In October last year the progressive government we had was dumped out and replaced by the most regressive coalition we have seen in my lifetime. It's likely that we will lose this slot without significant effort and quite a bit of time in the environment court.
Griffin creek is steep, constant, high volume yet relatively easy to access - a combination that makes it very precious.
The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand is fundraising for the legal fight (and has a great track record for fighting these fights).
If you're able to help, please consider making a small donation to save this special place.

There is some very nice footage of what is at stake in this clip

I tend to feel a bit old when my friends kids are on the charge and ripping it up, but here's some nice footage of young Mr Uhl lapping my favourite section of whitewater at my favourite level (looks like about 70 cumecs).

Decided to take the high road into Dunedin today. Packed my Infrared camera just for larks. Here's a view looking down the harbour. i love how trees look in the IR!

@iangriffin Very tempted to send my little ef-m body in to have he filter removed, looks great!

River,
@River@mountains.social avatar

@iangriffin tThe lens system may now be obsolete (Canon says it isn't but you can't buy new bodies anymore), I have a spare m100 doing nothing so it seems like a good option. It was a surprisingly good little astro camera.

@iangriffin Yes! Magic lantern would be great! I have an M6 mkii that I picked up low count second hand (but that sensor is pretty brutal with most of the available glass). Currently contemplating a jump to another system

Jedigirl, to Christianity

I grew up as a Christian. My father was an Anglican minister. The problem I have with other Christians I've met is the hypocrisy. Many of them seem full of hatred and judgement and pay no heed to the actual teachings of Christ, which surely should be the basis of Christian faith. In the end I walked away from the Church.

Andor is one year old today.
This show is exactly what I'd given up hoping for, from a big IP. I never thought a Star Wars series would be one of my favorites of the year.

What's your favorite scene?
(for me, it's extremely hard to choose 🤣)

@jackyan This is what act is saying out loud here, and national has in its sub script. Heritage through Focus on the Family, The Family Research Council, and the apAlliance Defending Freedom are the main source of funding for all the anti Trans campaigners.

Only over the last few days did I notice what felt like an increase in advertising in my Fedi timeline.

I’m surprised to say: it doesn’t bother me at all. Quite to the contrary, I actually like it!

Artists promoting their work, showing me cool stuff I might like to buy. A rail nerd with a special ticket offer. People selling used stuff.

I hate spying. But I don’t mind this sort of “here’s what I have, do you want it?” advertising.

    @slothrop Some cool versions! Surprisingly good sound quality to - even with the Spotify compression.
    Yeah even the junk seems to get snapped up here quickly. I sold all my LPs, never really listened to them and people were prepared to pay silly money for them so I took the cash and am buying everything I ever wanted on cd - they aren't as cool, but they will play well for the rest of my life and a lot easier to store and transport.

    But - it seems to me that pretty much anyone who involves themselves with pootin 💩🥫 ends up falling out of a window at some point...

    I did have an interesting conversation with an old radio engineer I used to work with about the logistics of a high wattage moon bounce transmission. If you we're talking to hams on the shuttle back in the day you had to keep the transmission power down to protect its systems, I can't imagine those little satellites would cope all that well with a KW through a directional antenna pointing at them....

    @slothrop End of lines are good. I think Lettmann distribute that Canadian Level 6 gear now don't they?
    Those suits look fine, I mean no dry suits look that great to begin with and it's nice if they are becoming a bit more affordable

    @slothrop Matching gear is always nice! I'm all black and green an the moment (with orange blades and boats - hoping there is an agreeable colour mix machete in the container)

    River,
    @River@mountains.social avatar

    @slothrop I used to just use what I could get a deal on - which I did have a bit of choice with, but I was going through gear so regularly it was all mostly faded 🤣 Everything is so expensive now so I'm being picky.

    Getting pretty excited!!

    River,
    @River@mountains.social avatar

    @slothrop Sounds like a good plan! Fit is so important and if yoy can get a good price for your Ripper amd get a good deal on a Machete then do it. I'm so out of touch with the second hand boat market here, it used to mostly be on the national whitewater for sale forum, but I suspect its all on Facebook marketplace now and I'm not going there...
    The flush is a good looking boat, I think there may be one left, there is definitely one last Ace of Spades that I would love as a rock boat!
    Really hope this mission comes off for you!
