Whenever I'd see those weird data points with my wrist-based heart rate while running I'd think to myself that it was either a sensor sampling issue or maybe some weird thing with acceleration. I never really studied it though. Turns out it's something called cadence lock. Maybe I'll go back to using a chest strap again for runs.

@hankg great article- confirms what suspect is happening to my Garmin, which thinks my heart rate is in zone one, when I’m at zone 4/5 trying to haul myself up a peak on my mountain runs. I’ll try it with a chest strap in future 👍

Taking a short pause from because I've picked up some pressure in the outer metatarsal bone on my left foot. Web searches suggest it could be overuse and the tendons are suffering. Of course, it could also be a stress fracture.

I had been on pace to reach my goal 1,000 km for the year, but I think I'm going to have to let it go.

@mlawton I had a fibula stress fracture that I tried to ignore about a year ago. The pain kept getting worse and worse. Was gutted when physio banned me from running for 6 weeks, and then several weeks of walk / jog recovery after that. But it worked.

Dear community,

do you have good recommendations for a book about the life of runner? Not a technical book. Born to Run (1) would fit this description, or Outsider by Brett Popplewell.

Thanks!

@fo feet in the clouds by Richard Askwith. About the lives of several fell running legends. Great inspiration. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feet_in_the_Clouds

@renwillis very wise - I was running last week trying to ignore a cold and the runs felt awful. It was nice to get outside though.

A bit slower than last year, but getting a few weeks ago didn’t help. At least I got round and it was my 2nd best 50k time. https://www.xnrg.co.uk/events/humanity-direct-tring-ultra/2023/results

Wednesday's 1km of walking (at a good clip) as a warm up followed by 5km of . Heart still feels like it's jackhammering in my chest, but it's an improvement over the last run, and I got to splash in a puddle, which is always a bonus. No rain, but 100% humidity is unpleasant. Will see how my legs feel later.

Blurry image of my left shoe splashing in a puddle.

@WTL good to see you running again. Have you got a recovery plan to get you back up to your previous (incredible) weekly volume? 😎

Damn, no more for a while. Managed to avoid until now. Not sure I’ll be fit enough for the Tring Ultra 50km on 23/9/23 or the Lakes in a Day 50 miles in 7/10/23. And the running weekend next week with the club also cancelled for me. Any suggestions on covid recovery programmes for endurance runners appreciated.
