Thinking of getting a piece of land cleared to convert into a pasture with fruit trees. That means removing 300 dense-stand silver firs; 40 years old, average 40 cm breast height diameter and 15m high.
The offer I've gotten is 5 Eur/tree, for thermal use. This is ~8% of what firewood goes for, or 10% of the equivalent cost in heating oil. But it saves me min. 5 years of work and still leaves me with 700 trees.

Is there any grass growing between them or is it fully covered in needles? Do you want to graze livestock or just have an orchard? I know of several people that graze cattle under widely spaced pines.

I have sifted out the subscriptions on my podcast player. Many of the tech pods have been jettisoned to make way for homebrewing and mushroom growing pods. Suddenly, my newest hobbies are most important to me.
You know, my employer, over the course of my career, has been bought several times. The representatives of the new regime always claimed everyone's job was safe, it was going to be business as usual and they weren't going to change a thing. They always broke those promises. My advice, if your employer gets bought, is start looking for a new job and leave on your terms.

I'll tell you who was shocked. When I worked for AT&T, my portion of the company was sold off. The HR folks from the new employer set up shop in our office and commenced the onboarding process. They kept calling me and telling me if I didn't come down and fill out the paperwork, I wouldn't have a job with them on the following Monday. I told them I was aware and no intention to do so. Shocked. They were shocked.๐คฃ
After 3 tries at capturing and growing yeast from a 4 pack of Maredsous Tripel, I'm convinced they're doing something to kill the yeast in their bottles. I give up.๐คท

Early on in dating my future wife, I noticed that even though she's objectively brilliant, she doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to her environment. One of my favorite things to do is randomly buy her flowers and place them somewhere in plain view in the house and see how long it takes her to notice them. We're going on day 3 right now for a bouquet on the kitchen counter. ๐ ๐คฃ
One of the Mastodon features I'd most like to see is an option to toot to only your instance. You can chose to be global, global without discovery, followers only or private(DM). We join instances that are themed to an interest. Being able to toot to only your instance makes sense.

This xz backdoor thing reminds me of a story I heard from friends that worked at a tech company that made cell phones. They had a great coder that worked on the project, he had put in work as a contractor for a few months, and due to the quality of his work he was hired in full time. After two months he simply stopped showing up to the office.
An investigation turned up the following interesting items. His account had accessed all files including source code to all cellular projects - in that he had apparently downloaded a copy of everything. He had committed a large amount of contributions to the project he was assigned to. None of his paychecks were ever cashed. A wellness check to the house he had rented was performed and the house was completely empty. Per the landlord he'd paid for 6 months rent in advance in cash. Apparently he never physically moved in. No record for him nor his social security number seemed to check out. The guy was a ghost.
I was asked about recommendations on future prevention by friends who worked there - no idea how far they got in their investigation, if backdoors were ever found or even existed, or if the Feds were ever involved. The punch line? This was probably a couple of decades ago.
This shit is real, and it has been going on for a long time.
