But even that would cover a large percentage of the American workforce, and I imagine over a few years, it will grow to cover all users that don’t need personal accountants. Progress is progress.

Personally, I hope this transitions into a system where they email you a proposed return and you do nothing to accept it (only needing to take action if there’s an issue).

Syncthing is what Dropbox was before Dropbox became a cloud service. It synchronizes files between two or more computers in real time, efficiently and using encryption. It uses open protocols and is open source.

A NAS is Network Attached Storage. It’s basically just a computer dedicated to providing you storage space. (Could be as simple as an old laptop with external USB drives hosting a Windows share to … much much more complicated, including dedicated specialized hardware or NAS-specific OS). Having your own NAS is important to building your own cloud alternatives, in my opinion.

@TeddE@lemmy.world avatar

That would provide the storage. If you left it connected to a computer that was permanently on, and that computer was connected to a network, you’ve got a NAS. ☺️

There’s more to grow from there. You’ll want to consider backups before too long as a safeguard against data loss, (but if this is your first NAS, that can be a task for another day)

Have you considered syncthing & NAS?

I have a similar use case, what do you recommend on the pi for a TV OS?

A slightly less naive take is that we’re getting these statements on public record, so that we can take action on them later (assuming that day ever comes 😓)

Impeachment by a future Congress was what I had in mind loosely. But I’m just one(1) person and not an expert on the subject. I suspect there may be options I do not see, but keeping a record is important to any future action on the matter.

Not free, but I’ve found great value with purelymail.com. Cost is $10/year or there’s a calculator for advanced pricing (basically AWS costs forwarded).

If you provide your own domain, you can have unlimited email addresses. If you use a provided domain, there’s no predefined limit, but abuse will be stressed by the developer.

If you lose the master account’s password the admin cannot reset it for you, which indicates a strong commitment to privacy.

Because it’s paid, no activity requirements, phone number requirements, or invitations.

It has one of the best terms of service pages I’ve ever read.

Top comment from the linked page:

"Looks like the book only included the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Those two amendments were not specifically excluded. This is rage bait. "

For what it’s worth, it’s been suggested that Musk’s takeover of Tesla was opportunistic, and against the desire of Tarpenning and Eberhard.

From my research, Tarpenning was pressured into quitting, and Eberhard was fired by the board of directors for lying to the board. Since Elon was chairman of the board at the time, it’s plausible (and even hinted at) that Elon played dirty to push through this firing.

I cannot say for sure if they would have handled the company more ethically then Musk, but I am personally uncomfortable hanging them out to dry simply on what could have been.

That said, I agree that employee co-ops are a top tier business organization structure.

Reliable public transport with a robust interstate passenger railway system coupled with a well designed intracity bus system, along with well maintained biking paths everywhere else would go a long way to getting bad drivers off the road.

We can’t get bad drivers off the road when basic everyday living requires driving. There are cost effective alternatives in use across the world. America just has to learn to accept good ideas that others have pioneered.

Could public transit be considered to reduce the need for everyone to drive?

It’ll never happen if we all agree it’ll never happen. I like taking about them, as it’s my way of making it more likely to happen

No argument from me. I’m probably insane. But I’m not under oath, or doing a job, or undertaking a responsibility; I’m just me, talking to strangers in a public chat room. Why should I limit myself to the practical? Is there a rule against expressing dreams in this room?

And I agree, even if I convinced everyone overnight, and we had the willpower to do it, I’m still proposing infrastructure changes that I may not see finished in my life, but building for the next generation is still noble to me, in my insanity.

Agreed, the author simply asserts that brains are interactive as if that’s some big gotcha. The whole idea of the vat is that the machine is complicated to handle these things, at least well enough for your own system.

Sanderson’s short story ‘Perfect State’ actively explores the edge cases of what a simulation world would have to do to deal with ‘i survived this thing that normally kills everyone’.

Join the bidet club! It’s great, and environmentally friendly (making paper uses a bunch of water). There are many models you can add to an existing toilet.

Correct. That or any number of similar things is the subtext of the Charlie Brown football gag meme. Lucy always, always yanks it away.
