A march by Edward Elgar is the traditional soundtrack for American college commencements and high school graduations. It’s a stirring bit of music, but perhaps an odd choice, given its roots as a celebration of the British king.

Here’s a brief history of how it happened:

"Every so often, a cause ignites a sustained fury on college campuses across the nation. In 2020, it was Black Lives Matter. In 2011, it was Occupy Wall Street. In the 1980s, it was apartheid in South Africa.

Today, it’s the Israeli military campaign in Gaza."

Here are five books that shine light on a rich history of campus protests in the US that goes back to the 1960s – compiled by veteran journalist Steve Friess.

It's Friday time!

Here's the first question:

The first crewed launch of Boeing's new reusable spacecraft was scrubbed again on May 6 because of issues with its booster rocket. What is Boeing's spacecraft named?

Check your answer and see how well you've been following the news, here: https://theconversation.com/the-conversation-u-s-weekly-news-quiz-189437b
(It's a tougher than usual quiz this week, but we're not aiming at the level of users)

@WainuiTrailerTrash @nikatjef Sorry, not sure how that extra b got onto the URL. Unfortunately, polls are the one type of post one can't edit on Mastodon.

@bittersweetdb we know and correct our typos regularly. But, you can’t with polls without erasing the poll.

Get ready for the future of transportation! One company hopes to test out its electric flying taxis at the Paris Olympics.

@hstaples I think the electric engines will be significantly quieter than the fossil-fuel powered ones -- at least that is what the proponents say.

Something to remember as we all prepare for :

In the United States today, it can feel like conservatives and liberals are living in different realities. To build bridges, make the case about how issues affect us personally, not just how they play into our political arguments.

More, and the research behind this:

@tpanero I read the article differently: I think what it's saying is that discussing the impact of climate change on the grandchildren of the person you are talking to is a way to open a more effective dialogue than just talking about it in the abstract.

I love the idea of this "What is a #fact?" #humanities course aimed at #STEM students (as described in @TheConversationUS) and absolutely wish I could read the whole syllabus!
