@VestigialLung@dice.camp

Hi, everyone, I’m Andrew, He/him pronouns. I’m a TTRPG, science, video game, and music (esp. the navel-gazing side of the metal spectrum) nerd. I’m currently learning Norwegian and working on immigrating away from the US. I post a lot about that last part right now, as it’s kind of the biggest thing in my life right meow.

Just learned that an extreme fundamentalist Christian cult from my home state, the 12 Tribes, is at this point a global phenomenon. So yeah, if you see a hippie-looking sandwich shop called the Yellow Deli, their main front, unless you’re a fan of funding slave labor and child abuse from a cult that’s been known to disappear those who are too critical of them, maybe grab a sandwich somewhere else instead.

for the week’s theme is songs about the sun. I worried I was going to have difficulty with this one, since my musical tastes skew so bleak, so ask me to post about the moon or night, and I can rattle off an endless supply of songs, but the day star… turns out I was right about having difficulty but more due to having trouble narrowing down than getting enough.

Songs will be nested under this.

The #TuneTuesday prompt is #TheIntro songs with intros that are better than the rest of the song. I’m a little surprised no-one’s posted this one yet, but here’s imo the textbook example of this.

prompt this week is : anti-war songs.

1.) Pain of Salvation - Oblivion Ocean
"Where is my mother?"
The child asked the soldier
The soldier was watching them both fade away
Nine words create an oblivion ocean:
"Dad tell me, will I be dead very long?"
https://songwhip.com/pain-of-salvation/oblivion-ocean

2.) System of a Down - Boom
Four thousand hungry children
Leave us per hour from starvation
While billions are spent on bombs
Creating death showers

“Plodding” isn’t normally a word you want attached to your music, but it’s so how about some plodding doomy music with black and post influences as well as a heavy helping of darkwave?

this week is going to be Shawn James with The Shadow. A blues musician with the ability to bring all the grit and weight of extreme metal to his voice when he wants to. That’s not on display with this tune, being more of a somber affair, but if you’re a metal fan looking for blues music you’d like, he’s a good place to start.

The most important medical relationship in America is between a patient and the politicians deciding whether or not medically appropriate care conflicts with a conservative interpretation of Christianity. The second most important medical relationship is between the patient and their insurance provider who decides whether its shareholders would be better served by the patient not receiving medically appropriate care. Patient/doctor is at best of tertiary importance.

I’ve never heard a piece of music titled “Dies Irae” that I didn’t love, and since correlation definitely implies causation, I can offer this unsolicited advice to any making music out there. Title your tracks “Dies Irae” doesn’t matter if it fits; doesn’t matter if the song was good to begin with; doesn’t matter that if you title every song the same, people talking about your songs becomes a logistics nightmare, all songs must be Dies Irae.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

#TransMusicMonday this week will be Nevermøurn (Jordie, drums, she/her). Shoutout to @JoscelynTransient for introducing me to the band.

My first impression of the band was as sort of a thrashier Arch Enemy, but they’re a lot more diverse than that, splashing across several variations of metal after the explosive opening track. Here’s a track that highlights multiple aspects of what they can do.

#BlackMetalMonday
Nymphrenia (DSBM/Post Black Metal)
Where Nymphrenia stands out for me is her vocals. Black metal vocals often feel very utilitarian for me. They’re there, but if I really notice the vocals, it’s usually not for a good reason. Her voice carries anguish in a way I haven’t often heard before. The recording sounds both loud and distant, as if you’re hearing someone scream crying uncontrollably next door, almost voyeuristically observing their torment. [1/2]

This week’s prompt is , songs about electricity (non-electric takes on “shock” also valid/welcome).

My first thought was Metallica’s Ride the Lightning. Being a bad metal head who doesn’t particularly enjoy Metallica, that pretty quickly lead me to Iron Horse’s bluegrass cover, and since there’s a long history of blues/bluegrass songs about the American carceral system, and because it takes next to no push to get me on a concept, here’s five songs about the chair.

Started listening to next week’s Trans Music Monday artist, and based on these recommendations, I can only conclude that it’s experimental enough that Spotify has decided it fits into the “not actually music” category. Judgy robot is judgy.

Normally I strive to post a fairly diverse mix of songs for these, but I think I’m going to break from that to follow a theme. Funeral doom is a micro genre that frequently addresses themes of the passage of time or eternity, so here’s five funeral doom songs. For a plus, all five of these artists have <1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, so here’s also five severely under appreciated artists:

Songs you’ll never grow tired of. Well, here’s a collection of songs I’ve been listening to since high school or college (with one exception), probably a pretty good indicator that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
1.) Opeth - The Drapery Falls

2.) Pain of Salvation - Imago

Got a new release for you. Hamferð typically plays death doom; their latest album largely skews more gothic and melodic, sort of in the vein of Swallow the Sun (so if the track I’m posting feels too aggressive, the album might still be for you). This is the exception, and goddamn, just… goddamn.

The prompt for the week is : songs that tell a discrete story (as opposed to one part of a concept album)
1.) Nile - Unas, Slayer of the Gods
Pulled from mythology, the story of a warrior who killed off gods who were past their prime and consumed their essence, ascending to godhood in his own right.
https://songwhip.com/nile/unas-slayer-of-the-gods

2.) Ren - Money Game III
Ren is many things, and near the top of the list is a fantastic musical storyteller.

Today’s #TuneTuesday prompt is #BreakUpOrMakeUp. I’ll be taking the option of posting two songs, a heartbreak song and a love song.

Heartbreak: Slipknot - Snuff
I went through a really bad breakup several years back, left me in a really bad place for months. This song was deep in my rotation during that time.

For it’s time for my periodic addition to my playlist to break up the metal of it all, so here’s some slow jazz. I’m hearing a bit of tension between the lead lines sounding a bit like pleasant lounge music over an underlying pulse that has something discomfiting about it. It makes for a pretty cool effect.

prompt is .
This was a week where narrowing down my options was the biggest challenge, so I went with picking some musicians I don’t often talk about. I think 3/5 of these haven’t ever made one of my music prompts osts.
1.) Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Their Helicopters Sing

This week’s prompt is , songs about circles or cycles.

1.) John Coltrane - Giant Steps
This song is often used to illustrate/teach the musical concept of circle of fifths, around which it’s built; it’s how I learned about it, and weirdly, it’s the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the prompt.
https://songwhip.com/johncoltrane/giant-steps

2.) Elton John - Circle of Life

3.) Black Dresses - Wheel of Fortune
