Hi, everyone, I’m Andrew, He/him pronouns. I’m a TTRPG, science, video game, and music (esp. the navel-gazing side of the metal spectrum) nerd. I’m currently learning Norwegian and working on immigrating away from the US. I post a lot about that last part right now, as it’s kind of the biggest thing in my life right meow.

I can’t remember what I was listening to that made me think to suggest as a prompt, but with my goal of posting queer musicians all month, it likely doesn’t matter.

As a function of the overall runtime of this song, the ~2 min outro isn’t super long, but the excruciating tempo drop, downright hostile abuse of dissonance, and the aggressively destructive production techniques, it feels a lot longer than it is. I like it, but YMMV

#TuneTuesday #MyGenerationMusic
86 is pretty much a wasteland for my musical tastes. I don’t care for most of the primordial era of extreme metal, not a thrash fan, my tastes in hip hop don’t include much from the 80s, Maiden’s album is far from my favorite, the holdovers from the 70s prog scene haven’t put out music I enjoy in years, the prog revival hasn’t started yet. Candlemass is normally my go to for this sort of prompt, but for another option:

#TransMusicMonday (KatieDavies, she/her)
The year is 1999, Norma Jean is the heaviest, most abrasive thing I’ve ever heard. It’s 2024, and I’ve finally heard a band that challenges that. Their second album is slightly softer than their first, more of a sonic punch in the face vs a punch in the throat, but the introduction of conceits such as dynamics and melody tend to make the brutal bits feel even harder.

Normally I go for someone a bit off the beaten path b/c all things equal, might as well promote the artist who needs the recognition worse, but when you get someone achieving mainstream pop success with a song this fucking brutal it deserves recognition. #MusicWomenWednesday

#TransMusicMonday this week will be Nevermøurn (Jordie, drums, she/her). Shoutout to @JoscelynTransient for introducing me to the band.

My first impression of the band was as sort of a thrashier Arch Enemy, but they’re a lot more diverse than that, splashing across several variations of metal after the explosive opening track. Here’s a track that highlights multiple aspects of what they can do.

#TuneTuesday #SameTitleDifferentSong
After my joking post about it yesterday, I went down a rabbit hole to see if I could find a song titled Dies Irae I didn’t like, found one or two, but I’ve absolutely got examples of songs with the same title that are entirely different.

First, the classic that got me on that rabbit hole:

And for the rest:

I’ve never heard a piece of music titled “Dies Irae” that I didn’t love, and since correlation definitely implies causation, I can offer this unsolicited advice to any making music out there. Title your tracks “Dies Irae” doesn’t matter if it fits; doesn’t matter if the song was good to begin with; doesn’t matter that if you title every song the same, people talking about your songs becomes a logistics nightmare, all songs must be Dies Irae.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Nymphrenia (DSBM/Post Black Metal)
Where Nymphrenia stands out for me is her vocals. Black metal vocals often feel very utilitarian for me. They’re there, but if I really notice the vocals, it’s usually not for a good reason. Her voice carries anguish in a way I haven’t often heard before. The recording sounds both loud and distant, as if you’re hearing someone scream crying uncontrollably next door, almost voyeuristically observing their torment. [1/2]

The #TuneTuesday prompt is #TheIntro songs with intros that are better than the rest of the song. I’m a little surprised no-one’s posted this one yet, but here’s imo the textbook example of this.

Songs you’ll never grow tired of. Well, here’s a collection of songs I’ve been listening to since high school or college (with one exception), probably a pretty good indicator that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
1.) Opeth - The Drapery Falls

Devi McCallion and Katie Dey
Devi is one half of Black Dresses, which apparently blew up on TikTok. I’d never heard of Katie before digging into Devi’s discography, but based on this, I’m intrigued. If you enjoy Nine Inch Nails, particularly the weirder side of NIN, this might be for you.

Got a new release for you. Hamferð typically plays death doom; their latest album largely skews more gothic and melodic, sort of in the vein of Swallow the Sun (so if the track I’m posting feels too aggressive, the album might still be for you). This is the exception, and goddamn, just… goddamn.

Today’s #TuneTuesday prompt is #BatonPass: two songs that shouldn’t be separated.

Going to have to post a screenshot b/c there’s a bit of a story behind why I feel this way, and I don’t feel like having to deal with a thread.

YouTube link b/c this version doesn’t exist outside of the Eras tour, which is available on Netflix if that’s the soulless corporation you’d rather fund bs Google ;)

Liturgy (Ravella Hunt Hendrix) is described as “transcendental black metal”. I tried watching some of her videos going into the underlying theology behind the music, and i was pretty lost, but the music is brilliant, and I’m about as spiritual as a damp sock, so me not following her esotericism isn’t surprising.

This was one of the first albums I bought, not 100% sure it’s the first, but it’s one of two or three that could have been (I’ve slept a few times since then, and they would have all been pretty close together). It also kickstarted my love of metal.

Woe skews a bit more explosive than I generally enjoy in black metal (I’m generally more partial on the whole to the atmospheric/shoegazey side of the spectrum), but it’s by no means never what I’m in the mood for.

Little Simz dropped an EP recently, and if this is the direction her music is going in, I’m really excited to hear the next album. She’s got some of the composition credits on this EP along with a few others; I’m not sure which of the beats she had a direct hand in vs what others contributed, but it doesn’t really matter b/c they’re all stellar.

I’m tied up today with work and a bunch of calls I need to squeeze in, so in lieu of picking five songs for the #ThursdayFiveList prompt of #TheMemories here’s one link.
The goal with this was to put the listener in the head of someone living with Alzheimer’s. It starts early in the progression and over the course of its runtime, steadily degrades as the patient’s grip on reality does. It’s a hard listen, so give it a pass if you aren’t in an okay headspace for that.
