Hi, everyone, I’m Andrew, He/him pronouns. I’m a TTRPG, science, video game, and music (esp. the navel-gazing side of the metal spectrum) nerd. I’m currently learning Norwegian and working on immigrating away from the US. I post a lot about that last part right now, as it’s kind of the biggest thing in my life right meow.

Just learned that an extreme fundamentalist Christian cult from my home state, the 12 Tribes, is at this point a global phenomenon. So yeah, if you see a hippie-looking sandwich shop called the Yellow Deli, their main front, unless you’re a fan of funding slave labor and child abuse from a cult that’s been known to disappear those who are too critical of them, maybe grab a sandwich somewhere else instead.

prompt is .
This was a week where narrowing down my options was the biggest challenge, so I went with picking some musicians I don’t often talk about. I think 3/5 of these haven’t ever made one of my music prompts osts.
1.) Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Their Helicopters Sing
https://songwhip.com/godspeed-you-black-emperor/their-helicopters-sing

2.) Bridge City Sinners - Laugh While You Can

Normally I go for someone a bit off the beaten path b/c all things equal, might as well promote the artist who needs the recognition worse, but when you get someone achieving mainstream pop success with a song this fucking brutal it deserves recognition. #MusicWomenWednesday

The prompt for the week is . Narrowing my options down was easy this week, as I wound up with five songs from bands I’ve never posted (at least for this hashtag)
1.) Cage the Elephant - Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked

2.) Moonspell - As We Eternally Sleep on It

Today’s prompt is . Remixes aren’t something I often go looking for, but I’ve always liked what Trent are not brought to the table in his remix albums.

this week is : songs that don’t include their title in the lyrics.

Between the all funeral doom Thursday Five List I posted and Slow Sunday, it would seem this is a funerary musical week for me, so here’s Atramentus. Given the… verbiosity of the title, I’d argue that this is more of a “please don’t say my name” situation, but it fits the prompt ;)

prompt is , songs you discovered only to find out they’d been around for a hot minute.

Cutting my teeth in the nu metal era, I had a pretty dim view of anything out of the 80s. Enter Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, which had this little known ;) gem on the soundtrack, which floored me.

This was one of the first albums I bought, not 100% sure it’s the first, but it’s one of two or three that could have been (I’ve slept a few times since then, and they would have all been pretty close together). It also kickstarted my love of metal.

For how about some avant-garde metal? Vocalist goes by Leilindel (stage name, apart from the band’s drummer I don’t know any of their real names)

This week’s prompt is , songs about circles or cycles.

1.) John Coltrane - Giant Steps
This song is often used to illustrate/teach the musical concept of circle of fifths, around which it’s built; it’s how I learned about it, and weirdly, it’s the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the prompt.

Dan Carlin had an episode of Hardcore History I listened to several years back, truly a horrifying event. Years later, I threw this album on absentmindedly while I was working and upon reaching this track, had the thought that something about it seemed familiar, like that really fucked up shipwreck story. Apparently Carlin’s storytelling stuck with me strongly enough that years later, half listening to an album, I still clocked the theme.

For here’s Ragana’s (Maria Stocke and Coley Gilson) You Take Nothing, a song that shows just how much mileage you can get out of three words, as the majority of its almost six and a half minute runtime has the title as its sole lyrics, and yet it still feels fresh and impactful.

This week’ prompt is , songs you’d choose to walk out to a boxing or similar ring. I’m not huge on combat sports, but as I understand it, what you’re looking for is an immediate vibe and some sort of high drama moment in the first 30ish seconds. Accordingly, I was on the fence in the end between this song and Atramentus’s Stygian I. Ultimate deciding factor was Stygian I was already on my tune tues playlist.

#TuneTuesday #MyGenerationMusic
86 is pretty much a wasteland for my musical tastes. I don’t care for most of the primordial era of extreme metal, not a thrash fan, my tastes in hip hop don’t include much from the 80s, Maiden’s album is far from my favorite, the holdovers from the 70s prog scene haven’t put out music I enjoy in years, the prog revival hasn’t started yet. Candlemass is normally my go to for this sort of prompt, but for another option:

Songs you’ll never grow tired of. Well, here’s a collection of songs I’ve been listening to since high school or college (with one exception), probably a pretty good indicator that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
1.) Opeth - The Drapery Falls

2.) Pain of Salvation - Imago

.
1.) Emil Assergård, Jasmine Kara - När Räven Raskar
When I ran out of tracks I knew, I went looking for music in Norwegian b/c 2 birds 1 stone and all. Instead I found this, which looks to my eyes like poorly spelled Norwegian and so is probably Swedish, which is close enough that I could identify it fitting the theme. The chorus references “räven räsker over isen” (the raven speeds over the ice), which appears to be a children’s song.

Today’s #TuneTuesday prompt is #BreakUpOrMakeUp. I’ll be taking the option of posting two songs, a heartbreak song and a love song.

Heartbreak: Slipknot - Snuff
I went through a really bad breakup several years back, left me in a really bad place for months. This song was deep in my rotation during that time.

Love: Rod Stewart - Have I Told You Lately
He might be corny AF, but a lot of “love” songs read as obsession songs to me, come across a little (or more than a little) creepy. There’s a reason that Sting song from the perspective of a stalker gets mistaken for a love song to this day. By contrast, this one always felt real, felt genuinely sweet in a way.

Pairing Slipknot and Rod Stewart for a prompt feels weird, but here we are.

Little Simz dropped an EP recently, and if this is the direction her music is going in, I’m really excited to hear the next album. She’s got some of the composition credits on this EP along with a few others; I’m not sure which of the beats she had a direct hand in vs what others contributed, but it doesn’t really matter b/c they’re all stellar.

Liturgy (Ravella Hunt Hendrix) is described as “transcendental black metal”. I tried watching some of her videos going into the underlying theology behind the music, and i was pretty lost, but the music is brilliant, and I’m about as spiritual as a damp sock, so me not following her esotericism isn’t surprising.

Devi McCallion and Katie Dey
Devi is one half of Black Dresses, which apparently blew up on TikTok. I’d never heard of Katie before digging into Devi’s discography, but based on this, I’m intrigued. If you enjoy Nine Inch Nails, particularly the weirder side of NIN, this might be for you.

I can’t remember what I was listening to that made me think to suggest as a prompt, but with my goal of posting queer musicians all month, it likely doesn’t matter.

As a function of the overall runtime of this song, the ~2 min outro isn’t super long, but the excruciating tempo drop, downright hostile abuse of dissonance, and the aggressively destructive production techniques, it feels a lot longer than it is. I like it, but YMMV
