“If someone is on the fence I’ll just tell them some unfettered shit like Pete Buttigieg wants to ban halogen headlights or mud flaps and they’ll throw their credit card at me. It’s like taking candy from a baby.”

Lmfao, I know it’s satire, but this is so dead on it almost stings as well. The 90% Medicare reimbursement thing was the same way.

Wasn’t TF2 the first hero shooter?

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

I’m sure there’s some small game that technically invented it, but was rather obscure. TF2 was the first mass market hero game I can think of. I guess TF1, in some respects.

This was in the 70s and 80s, they probably didn’t have the tech. Kinda old news.

The new hotness is vampire facials at unlicensed clinics. They mix up your own blood with someone else’s, or don’t clean the centrifuge, you get infected.

Paywalled, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Trump elected judge.

It also means most of Florida is going to be exported to other states. I don’t think anyone (including FL) wants that.

Respect for marriage act was good, but I want to see Biden and congressional democrats (and moderate republicans) do more to protect Americans from losing their rights. That means human rights should have precedence over religious rights. I’ll be voting for dems this election for this and other reasons. We need to keep our democracy too.

Perhaps it’s just the US, but most of the time, the speeding bikes on bike paths here are non-electric, lycra clad fellows doing well over 40kmh on road bikes. I can’t even keep up with them on an ebike, haha. They also fly through the red lights, which makes me feel a bit unwell thinking about what could potentially happen if they are unlucky.

I’m a bit worried their aggressive behavior is reflecting poorly on the larger community while cars kinda get off with a slap on the wrist for things of a similar nature.

A family friend actually got pulled over for doing 64 kmh on his road bike. Non electric, but he was speed gunned and pulled over, haha.

Wahots,

Oooh, they are SO close to figuring it out. It involves narrowing the roads, putting in a barrier-separated lane with traffic signals for bikes, and a wider walkway for pedestrians. All the puzzle pieces are there, lol.

The seat is going to another conservative politician, so probably not. One can always hope, though. Iranian civilians would really benefit from a more relaxed leader. Though the supreme leader is really the one running the show. Perhaps he will also get on a really old helicopter, flying in the extreme fog and rain, over a remote mountain range like this guy did.

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

A very hard landing, NYT reported that he beefed it. Which is unsurprising considering they went down in extrmely heavy fog and rain while flying over a remote mountain range. You’re just asking for trouble at that point.

I’m sick of seeing these types of chains anyways in every small town and big city. We generally make it a point to only ever go to local places if we are eating out, which we rarely do anyways. Eating out is like…$30 /person. $30/groceries per person goes a lot longer and usually tastes way better, imo.

US says cyberattacks against water supplies are rising, and utilities need to do more to stop them (apnews.com)

Cyberattacks against water utilities across the country are becoming more frequent and more severe, the Environmental Protection Agency warned Monday as it issued an enforcement alert urging water systems to take immediate actions to protect the nation’s drinking water....

The EPA has faced setbacks. States periodically review the performance of water providers. In March 2023, the EPA instructed states to add cybersecurity evaluations to those reviews. If they found problems, the state was supposed to force improvements.

But Missouri, Arkansas and Iowa, joined by the American Water Works Association and another water industry group, challenged the instructions in court on the grounds that EPA didn’t have the authority under the Safe Drinking Water Act. After a court setback, the EPA withdrew its requirements but urged states to take voluntary actions anyway.

The Safe Drinking Water Act requires certain water providers to develop plans for some threats and certify they’ve done so. But its power is limited.

“I don’t need a safety on a gun! Safety is for sissies! …[incident]… Gah, I just blew my fucking foot off! Why didn’t anybody WARN me of the danger, this is all the goverment’s fault!”

Is the EU also limited by torque? My bike would be banned in the EU by motor wattage, but these have significantly higher nm of torque compared to mine. Mine is 85nm.

The EU variant appears to be 121nm.

You’d have to be suicidal to fly in deep fog and rain over remote mountains. IFR in extremely bad weather in a helicopter sounds awful. In my country, helicopters are grounded for a lot less. And those are newer helicopters too, afaik.

The best advice I can give you is to stop actively looking and just have fun. Join mountain biking groups, hop on Meetup and do fun things in your city or state, and make friends naturally. The healthiest relationships stem from natural friendships because you build up a base of stuff in common and have a lot of trust before you ever make the jump to “do you wanna go out with me?”

All else fails, you can join singles adventure clubs which also look quite fun. The best relationships I’ve had with men and women were from natural friendships. The most awkward and short ones were generally from dating apps or where they just didn’t have much in common with me.

I met my SO through playing 1,000 hours of a video game with them during the pandemic, constantly being on VC with them, then going on a really fun ski trip with them for about a week. I got to learn their habits, temperament, how they handle conflict, etc all over a long period of time. And a lot of my other friends matched in similar ways.

For what it’s worth, I notice now when people are kinda hoping to like…date or something vs just be friends. Their body language and behaviors are just ever so slightly different than those that just want to be friends. I think when you aren’t looking, people notice that you are more relaxed and don’t put up walls as much. Might be one reason why it’s easier to make friends as a kid, who knows, though.

All these are kinda no brainers, lol. I think we are still going to need nuclear as a baseload power supply where hydro doesn’t work because it’s too dry or flat. We gotta get off “clean coal” and “natural gas” as baseload power. I like sodium reactors and advanced, non-light water designs. Light water has become a political hot potato even though it is far safer than coal plants in terms of number of people hurt or killed by emissions.

As the coal and gas industry has done, advanced designs will need new names like “natural rock” to distance themselves from negative connotations.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled (lemmy.world)

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn’t rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn’t unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

Buy a security bitset! It is surprisingly handly to have around. Sometimes, I’ve needed a certain screw size that they don’t have in imperial, but they do have in metric at the hardware store. But it’s a security bit only.

They also work on regular, non security bits in a pinch.

Shifter on Youtube has a fantastic video on how Paris is changing their roads to be better for biking. Highly recommend it! I hope my city uses it as a template.
