"Car makers told to ditch distracting touchscreens: Safety body will penalize models that don't have simple button controls"

Glad this nonsense stops, haptic feedback for the win.

@fribbledom YAY FOR BUTTONS. What a concept!

MaybeMyMonkeys,

@fribbledom look at how they design interfaces on aircraft or spacecraft

@fribbledom never really understood the demand for touchscreens in cars. Maybe it’s the light-sensitive button-lover in me, but I want my dash to look like a Moog synth

@fribbledom As an easily distracted old person, I endorse this. @dougiec3

@fribbledom touch screens for navigating important car features is one of those "solutions" desperately in search of the problem

@fribbledom Not just haptic feedback - also muscle memory and the expectation that certain (emergency) functions are directy accessible

@fribbledom How is touchscreen worse than button in upholster?

@fribbledom you should get a insurance break for haveing a car without a computer

steinarb,
@steinarb@mastodon.social avatar

@fribbledom Yeah! Instead if touchscreens they should use Nintendo Wii hand controls to select buttons on the screen!

@fribbledom if only they also got rid of LCD screens for dashboards. GIVE ME MY GAUGES BACK GODDAMMIT

TestUser42,

@fribbledom It should be pretty straight forward, everything which is related to driving or interacting with other drivers schould be a physical button, everything else can be touch or whatever.
But it was a little weird, that I needed the voice control in my parents car, to activate the seat heating.

@fribbledom
Our Toyota, “you cannot modify this setting that you just navigated down through three menu levels to reach, because the car is in motion.”

Also our Toyota, “The screen has crashed, good luck screwing with the radio, settings, and driving directions to get things back the way you had them. Also, here's that damn redundant touch screen menu again!”

@fribbledom good news, I like that BMW has been sticking with the wheel button close to the gear. It feels much more natural than buttons around the screen or even worse touchscreen.
