Can we make it illegal to send marketing junk from "no-reply" emails?

If they can come into my inbox uninvited, the least they can do is read my reply abuse.

The general consensus is we need this to be 14 days at least. The more LNS and routers we have on line with latest code during that, the more confident we can be. The sword still hangs for now.

To explain: Typically, with a couple of "vulnerable" LNSs we lasted a week. With all LNSs and routers updated, 2 weeks is pretty clearly "OK", if that makes sense.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@penguin42 @revk of course, that will radically change the shape of traffic so it will almost certainly make it more - or less - likely to happen

First time on the Elizabeth Line. And first time travelling from Slough railway station. Has to be said: both mostly positive!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@bloor the only thing I dislike about the Elizabeth Line is the addition of the word "Line" to all the signage, in stark contrast to every other line on the Underground/Overground...

Registered for a postal vote because fuck the photo id requirements. https://gov.uk and search for “postal vote”. Job jobbed. You should do it too if you’re in the UK.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@pdcawley of course, they have also changed the rules on postal votes so you have to regularly re-apply (I think every 3 years?) and provide a bunch of supporting documentation.

Rather than the good old days of "just tick the box on your census form"

I wish I could work out what the hell is bugging me right now. I have no clue. I’ll work it out or forget it or something but just feels so “left the oven on” type thing somehow. Night all…

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk ahh, the old "have we fixed this intermittent bug that we were never 100% sure we understood precisely what was behind it but the changes sort of made sense" phase of development.

@Ryanteck@fosstodon.org avatar

How does this work then?

By breaking the seal I accept all of the terms and conditions that are inside the box? But I can't read them until I open it?

Also is arbitration clauses even allowed in the UK?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@Ryanteck pretty sure those kinds of thing haven't ever been enforceable

Fair play to Mailchimp; they've already replied to my abuse report to say they have enough information from that to investigate further.

I mean I'm not expecting them to do much more, but I am more inclined to fill in the form the next time a spammy company outright lies about me signing up to their crap.

ahnlak, to random
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

"You are receiving this email because you opted in via our website."

Sir, I've never heard of you or your website, and I sure as fuck never opted into your shitty sales crap.

Can I sue them for fraud or something?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

On the other hand, they sent it via Mailchimp, which has an abuse report link in the headers, and are clearly in violation of Mailchimps AUP so I've submitted an abuse report.

Maybe I can get them yeeted :)

I know Leo Varadkar was not super popular with his nation. But, as someone in the UK who has witnessed a succession of shit leaders, fucking hell it’s refreshing to hear a political leader say, effectively, “I’m not doing a good job, so I’m resigning”. I weirdly think history will be kind to him.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@bloor I'm suspicious that he jumped on the same day as Drakeford stood down as Wales' PM.

I reckon they're going off together to set up their own start-up country. Should have made them sign a non-compete.

I'm rather enjoying the noise around "The Stack" - a bunch of code that GitHub has "selected" to feed into a fancy pants AI they will no doubt then charge us to use.

A few of my ancient repos of half written, broken crap appears to have made the cut. I'm delighted to think that their model will be populated with that stuff; it will be worse than useless

Let's say you have a file you want people to be able to access for free on the internet in 2044.

The file is in the OpenDocument format and less than 10 MB in size uncompressed.

Where and how would you host it?

This is not a "test" or "experiment" - I'm genuinely asking! The only ideas I've had so far are dumb or obvious stuff like "puT iT oN gOoGle dRiVe" or host it on my website. But who can guarantee my hosting provider will be around in 20 years? Or even Google Drive, for that matter 🤔

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@ivana the only place you can be sure of is your own website, really. Any service run by someone else can be shut down.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@ivana well as long as you own the domain, you ultimately control what's on it (domain is, of course, the weak link here)

What an utterly ridiculous basis for portraying something as somehow “good”; that its ingredients are pronounceable.

Product packaging

Ok, having realised that Thunderbird pretty much does everything I want as long as I configure it properly (thanks fedi!) I've managed to de-google a lot of my email accounts.

I'm not sure I'd appreciated how much work google does to squash spam. Man there's a lot of it.

Why are wifi routers all so dumb? Where are the normal good ones? Between the £1000+ wifi 7 nonsense, the £400 “gaming” routers that look like dead spiders and the low-end consumer garbage that can’t handle more than two devices… there’s got to be something ~£150 that’s actually good and doesn’t pop up a chuffing cloud login box every time I try to change a setting 🫠
