"Services" is the most misunderstood, underused, and ignored feature nobody cares. Open only by accident, and the content doesn't make sense anyway.

akosma,
@akosma@mastodon.online avatar

@krzyzanowskim I made a service once for my nib2objc project; select a nib file on finder, use the service, and in your clipboard now you have the corresponding Objective-C code. It was useful! I guess I was the only one using it :)))

One of the common side effects of having to use that clusterfuck of usability that is Google Slides is that, all of a sudden, PowerPoint looks better than ever.

When learning a new technology or programming language do you fully read the docs first? Or do you try and build something and keep the docs handy? What's a good approach? 🤔

akosma,
@akosma@mastodon.online avatar

@parcifal imho there's no "good" approach, I know people who read the docs first, others (like me) just open an editor and start hacking with the docs at hand.

    @santiago but that’s the whole idea of gists. As a bonus, they are actual got repos.

    Reminder to not use "foo", "bar" or similarly named identifiers in user-facing documentation. If you who wrote the software find it hard to come up with a real-world use case (and with that, realistic names) for a feature, how would anyone else be able to?

    Also, please don't include sections stating they're "only for people who know what they are doing". We don't know what we are doing — that's why we're reading your docs in the first place, hoping you'd tell us.

    Cool, so when I receive a wire transfer from the US, my bank takes away $20US because, then does currency exchange to EUR, then takes away 16€ for "bringing the money here", then another 16.10€ for the currency conversion.

    It's a good thing I'm expensive too because damn.

    akosma,
    @akosma@mastodon.online avatar

    @fasterthanlime heh, reminds me of the first royalties cheque (yes, cheque) I got from O’Reilly… it was worth 500 USD, and the (Swiss cantonal) bank charged me… 50.

    10%.

    I asked O’Reilly to never send cheques again. They still took a commission from the wire transfer, but it was peanuts in comparison.
