Remember when Steve Jobs came back to Apple in '98 and killed so many product lines and internal projects because their product offerings had become bloated?

“Modern WordPress - Yikes!“

"Am I going crazy? Is this not the most utterly bizarre chimera of bastardised code you’ve ever seen?" https://dbushell.com/2024/05/07/modern-wordpress-themes-yikes/

@baldur And people wonder why I'm urging WP devs to diversify their skills.

alda,

@cbirdsong @baldur When I made the (very simple) FSE theme for my .dev domain, I felt like I was breaking so many best practices and conventions that I knew that I would not be able to get back to agency work if this is the new norm.

Be honest. Why do you dislike the .webp format? What did it do to you? 🤔

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@nixCraft I think most people dislike it because opening the file URL for those doesn't open them in the browser window but initiates a file download process.

Your gym's treadmill could just as well let you scan a PDF417 or DataMatrix barcode on your phone to get basic stats for your run instead of insisting on being internet connected and you using the manufacturer's app.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@sv1 I just take a picture of the stats and enter them manually into my fitness app, which then syncs it to the other ones.

However, while it allows me to do that, the UX is designed to repulse you from doing it that way.

I don't mean to pit anyone against each other but as a former contractor, I find it at best strange when another organisation describes itself as "the primary humanitarian organization in Palestine".

I've been out of the loop for a while perhaps, but this would be a change I'd be aware of.

Besides, the Palestinian Relief Bundle on Itch.io looks amazing, but as someone who knows how things actually work, I'm not too keen on it due to the above.

I'm all for new people entering software development, but all those coding bootcamps that are being pushed by the likes of Axel Springer are simply-put sinister schemes that are designed to leech on unemployment funds and churn out obedient 20-somethings to replace the skilled workers that are slightly older, more experienced and don't take the bullshit in the startup scene.

A common comment on this post was that I hadn't explained labour arbitrage clearly. Many thought I was making an argument against productivity or reusable code. So I added a section to better explain what I mean

"React, Electron, and LLMs have a common purpose: the labour arbitrage theory of dev tool popularity"

(Direct link to that section)

@baldur I remember in the mid-2010's when I was talking to agency owners that were certain that cramming JS into everything would mean that all their programmers would be full-stack for the price of a junior front-end developer in a couple of years.

And they keep trying to achieve this.

alda,

@baldur We need guilds, like other tradespeople.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@sv1 @baldur That's how the trades work even today. (And explains why watchmaking and goldsmithing is so difficult to get into.)

I guess "English (Cockney)" wasn't available as an option.

@RainofTerra I don't know... Perhaps I should just keep using words like "lad" and "trousers" and see where it takes me.

Got word from my landlord that the #PowerUsage is a bit high, so I just bought a #WattMeter to place here in my office to see what the usage of the #server and such is, and if it's high then I'm going to look into making a new #homelab with lower wattage computers.

Coming from #Iceland where the electricity is so cheap it messes a bit with a person's mind and behaviour.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@axelrafn I'd say it's fine compared to a gaming rig for instance.

Your landlord is simply a cheapskate.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@axelrafn Yeah. We found out the hard way that keeping that giant OLED TV in the living room running during the day surely affects the power bill.

The people who designed Amazon's Kinde-to-Print self-publishing process don't know much about print, do they?

Here I am attempting to read a book that I just got in the mail and the margins on the spine side are so tiny that the first character in a line is barely visible and the margins on the outer side are good 2.5-3 cm.

I'm not sure if they've even seen a book before.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

One more proof that technical skills and product knowledge are not only undervalued but simply not valued at all on the job market in comparison to obedience.

The flip side to “Europeans are lazy and don’t work hard” is that we’re able to maintain a modern society with a high standard of living while still being able to spend time with our families. And why kill yourself through overwork when most of the rewards go to somebody else, anyway?

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur But that was also a weird corpocult that went above and beyond in being an actual cult.
