  • Paid family leave

As someone who keeps her children (born and unborn) away from data detection, I know how catastrophic the #MOMS bill’s national #pregnancy database is.

But I am also a scholar who studies #NASA, so I know a government handout bill when I see one.

Look past the website to Title II, section 1a, eligibility for government grants for maternal support.

This is a #handout for pro-life nonprofits, with restrictions against funding for orgs like #PlannedParenthood , dressed up as maternal support.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite I’m not a expert, but the novel enmeshing of a privacy-violating technical system with anti-abortion politics might mean there is an opportunity for new bedfellows when it comes to lobbying on the Hill. Pro-choice and pro-privacy advocates must join forces to guard against the dual dystopias inherent to this Attwoodesque proposal. As in, @eff meet

NASA wants a cheaper Mars Sample Return—Boeing proposes most expensive rocket

@arstechnica as Green well knows, the cost of mission does not include the launch vehicle.

It's hard to imagine #StackOverflow made their decision without considering the fate #Twitter and #Reddit suffered. That they willingly chose to burn the remaining goodwill they had with their users is bewildering.

Right now, people are having active conversations here on #Mastodon about an #ActivityPub / #Fediverse replacement for SO.

cyberlyra,
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

@DaveMasonDotMe @mike

  1. Acquisition of Twitter and Reddit still looked like they could make a bleeding company money. They don’t care about community.

  2. We have a clone of SO from 2023 we are planning to host at home. Will post if relevant.

cyberlyra, to stackoverflow
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

In the history of data, reuse is a constant. In human history, regime change is a constant.

Hence the extractive repurposing going on at #stackoverflow, #github & #reddit to feed AI and take over your jobs. (And countless injustices, like DACA used for ICE, Nazis using invaded country birth records to find Jews, etc).

This is the true “tragedy of the commons”: upon hostile acquisition, what was once a gift indicating membership, care, and community is liable to unethical extraction.

Off the cuff thought: I've seen a few places open sourcing code from the 80's and 90's (notably MS DOS 4.0 https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/opensource/2024/04/25/open-sourcing-ms-dos-4-0/), now that the code's 30-40 years old, now that it's not viable to sell it anymore.

The max copyright lenght in the US was 42 years for a good chunk of our history.

There's no reason it should have changed. That code could have all been in the public domain by now

cyberlyra,

In the 90s — so the story goes — the APA noticed that they were basically only diagnosing boys with ADHD, so they checked, and, yep, girls get it too, it just looks different because ✨reasons✨. So they invented the inattentive subtype for ADHD to make sure girls got diagnosed too. And anyway it is so strangely validating not only to finally have a formal ADHD Diagnosis, but also to specifically have Girl ADHD™, because yes, obviously, correct.

    It’s so much better out here without a data-sucking behemoth controlling everything you see, flooding your search results with spam and injecting the internet with LLM-generated sludge. Bonus, if you leave, your data stops contributing to serious ethical problems.
