Finally finished the soldering and everything seems to work! Just couldn't test the stereo piezo buzzers yet, will need to write the QMK firmware first... In the meantime, here are the source and production files:

The newest version of my (mostly) xiao-compatible ch552t MCU board, Miao.
Now available at keeb.supply in this all new, pcba-friendly version: https://keeb.supply/products/miao

(I'll update the repo once I'm back home after the holidays)

Top view of the board. some small components are visible next to a USB-C port: two tiny buttons, a few resistors and capacitors, some ESD protection, and the actual MCU.

scaling up with aisler purely to be able to advertise "precision german-made pcbs"

apfel,

@jacqueline isn't aisler a dutch company 🤔

Miao, my hand-solderable & very cheap Xiao drop-in replacement, is now confirmed working! 🥳

Check the open-source hardware files: https://github.com/kilipan/miao/

Caveat: Not 100% compatible.

  • ch552t doesn't have all the features of rp2040, so some things are missing
  • added some additional pins to make up for it :D
-USB-port isn't as extended as on the Xiao, I placed it 1.6mm too far in (might fix in the next revision).
  • no castellated holes (expensive!)

What if we reduced the key amount a bit more?

apfel,

@fabrik42 the idea is basically this, moving V and ' to additional combos (maybe index+ring).
blue background indicates a combonof the two adjacent keys.
bottom text indicates the hold-function of the key (and top the normal tap-function).

apfel,

@ctietze @fabrik42 20gf chocs are so good! i use them on my small choc boards, too :)
i only press "between" buttons for vertical combos, though. horizontal ones feel better with two fingers, imo.

btw im also happy to share links to the repos now. pls excuse the mess and lack of docs, i am so busy trying to get things feature complete https://sr.ht/~jacqueline/tangara/

apfel,

@jacqueline that kicad bus feature for the schematics is so neat! never knew it existed 🙈

Any similarities between the community and the community?

• Both will make you realize you were writing with a squishy poorly made piece of junk
• You're introduced to old tech that operates pretty differently but still more or less works the same
• You'll change your writing/typing habits because you don't need to press down so much
• You can technically get more bang for your buck
• Except you might get a little addicted to replacement parts

apfel,

@_ so for fountain pens, what's a good starter one? 👀

apfel,

@paradoxmo Thanks for the recommendation! :) I do own several fountain pens from my school days (learned to write with a LAMY abc 😅), but i wouldn't know what to look for to see whether they're any good. I've always liked writing with fountain pens, though 😊

apfel,

@paradoxmo i think my top priorities woukd be smooth writing, balance, aesthetic, in that order. To be quite honest I'm not in the market for a fountain pen right now, but it's very interesting to take a peak into the hobby!

put some more fitting caps on my UT22 💞

apfel,

@mangoiv good question!

apfel, to mechanicalkeyboards

Got myself some of Pseudoku's Liminal Chimera caps (printed in gray MJF by JLCPCB) and now I can finally use my KS-33 zilpzalp without the caps interfering with either the switches or the plate...

Top view of an FR4-stack zilpzalp keyboard with green nuphy aloe switches (ks33) and tiny gray keycaps (Liminal Chimera by Pseudoku)

apfel,

@mangoiv nope, they are ks-33 switches, lower profile with a kinda MX-compatible stem.
The caps are Pseudoku's Liminal Chimera, which is basically DES without the skirts.

after fighting the gnu embedded toolchain and stlink clone a bit, my wireless is finally ready to go 😍

apfel,

@AAMfP ... have you seen my other keyboards? 🙈😅

Advice for tenting a Ferris Sweep?

Hi! I'm going to be building a Ferris Sweep soon. I was curious if anyone has experience with tenting one of these things. It's compatible with splitkb's tenting puck, but having a camera tripod on my desk seems like it would be ridiculously tall, meaning I'd need to adjust my desk and monitor in an unreasonable way. I'd like...

apfel,

@no_priority I've seen people recommend Manfrotto pocket tripods, maybe those could work for you?
