I have used numpy.allclose to test for approximate equality in Python for years, but I recently found pytest.approx better, because it lets Pytest interpret the result. For example, with numpy.allclose:

> assert np.allclose(result, 3.061, atol=1e-3, rtol=1e-3)
E assert False
E + where False = <function allclose at 0x7f8fea7efa60>(1.4872, 3.061, atol=0.001, rtol=0.001)
E + where <function allclose at 0x7f8fea7efa60> = np.allclose

@jamescooke ah yes, this looks like a better mechanism as well. I have just defaulted to numpy.allclose ever since I first learned about it and not really noticed numpy.testing either 😊

@jamescooke but if, say, you were testing with Pytest anyway and just imported Numpy for the sake of checking approximate equality, you might as well use pytest.approx instead to avoid that extra dependency.

compost, to random

I have often heard some compost "experts" on social media asking people to stop composting grass clippings.

Unless you treat your grass with chemical products and I won't quote brands, there are no valid reasons not to compost your grass clippings.

Of course, if you prefer to let your grass go wild it is even better for the ecosystem.

Here I always collect our grass and make compost to give it back to the soil and make the grass more green.

arildsen,
@arildsen@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost how about just leaving it on the lawn? I usually do that.

arildsen,
@arildsen@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost oh... But won't I eventually starve the lawn of nutrients when I keep removing the clippings?
Should I then rather compost it and later distribute composted soil on the lawn to fertilise it?
Artificial fertilisers and pesticides are strictly off limits in my garden.

    One of the decisive moments in my understanding of and their limitations was when, last autumn, @emilymbender walked me through her Thai Library thought experiment.

    She's now written it up as a Medium post, and you can read it here. The value comes from really pondering the question she poses, so take the time to think about it. What would YOU do in the situation she outlines?

    @ct_bergstrom @emilymbender I am not convinced. I think the thought experiment relies too much on analogy to what a person would be capable of in that situation. A LLM is not a human brain and so, does not process information in exactly the same way.
    A person would surely be maxed out of ability to maintain an overview of so many boys off information at once.

    I've got to be honest, I am not so keen on all this hype.
    Now my son just figured out how to jailbreak and it's telling him how to make mustard gas 😵

    Do courses that introduce students to open source make a difference? This new paper summarizes what we know: https://neverworkintheory.org/2023/05/07/impact-of-oss-courses-on-student-self-efficacy.html
