Been dithering forever about how to replace our aging home NAS device - a ReadyNAS Duo from 2008?

It's still performing bravely, streaming just fine to our Plex server via 1Gb ethernet, then via wi-fi to the TV. But it's time to upgrade the capacity, speed, and abilities.

Off-the-shelf devices from Synology, Q-NAP, Asustor, etc, are functionally capable, but I'm irked by the creeping lock-in of proprietary OS, apps, or disk formats, & they all over-charge for the hardware you get. /1

@tartley, I went in the direction of building an x86 homeserver to eventually transition away from my DS218+ Synology NAS. One thing in your thread confused me - did you accidentally use MB instead of GB for RAM measurements?

@mozilla hosts email on Google?? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@badrihippo, afaik, Mozilla, the corporation (like many other companies in FOSS space like my employer, Canonical, RedHat, as Iโ€™ve heard mentioned on the internet, etc.), uses Google Workspace for their work email because they are not in the business of hosting email or business productivity suites, and prefer to entrust it with someone who does. Is it ideal? Imho, no. But this happens because it works best for those companies. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Iโ€™m trying out the app and it looks and works awesome! It, somehow, reminds me of the Reddit app in terms of the appearance, polish, and the customisability! Great job, @dimillian! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿš€ I have just released a major update to my book Boost Your Django DX.

โœ๏ธ This update contains new content, a bunch of edits, and uses the latest versions of tools, including 3.12 and 5.0.

๐Ÿ™ In the two years since I published the first version, I have learned a lot from the Python and Django communities. Iโ€™ve added and edited several sections to reflect these new ideas.

Had a corruption issue on my laptop preventing the access/deletion of a directory under the data directory of the snap which was also preventing the upgrade and removal of the snap. Decided to it and ran 'btrfs check --repair' from a live media session and it fixed the corruption without any unexpected side effects! ๐Ÿ˜Œ ๐ŸŽ‰

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

To be clear, I did create a backup before running the btrfs repair command.

If you're using an OS that is based on Arch (e.g. EndeavourOS), can you still say that you use Arch, btw?

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@writeblankspace, for the specific example, Iโ€™d say yes since EndeavourOS is just Arch + some things.

Apple sent me a market research survey...Which gave me an opportunity to productively roast the iOS developers on their choice to make Bluetooth and Wi-Fi toggles disrespect user choice.

How Android phones handle this much better, respecting a user's input and not automatically turning either back on after a day. All without having to go into the full settings to fully turn either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi completely off.

I also told them what they were doing right too.

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds, this is why I have custom toggles (for turning off Wi-Fi and toggling Bluetooth as those there were the only ones possible) for these created using the Shortcuts app ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds, imho, Apple doesnโ€™t want us to be able to quickly toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi because they want those to be on all the time as much as possible (for various reasons). I hate how they automatically turn on Bluetooth after every single OS update, overriding my preference to keep it turned off.

Fun fact: the music at the end of 2.5 Admins episodes is a bit quieter than at the beginning. That's because I understand that some people listen to podcasts while they go to sleep and I don't want to wake them up.

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess @jimsalter, nice! So if one listens to multiple episodes in a row, the start of the next episode is perfectly set up to wake them up ๐Ÿ˜œ

Even though I like their content, I donโ€™t enjoy having to manually skip past all the bitcoin talk in the shows (thanks for providing chapter markers). is their only show that Iโ€™ve been regularly listening to lately (RIP ). So Iโ€™m going to remove their shows from my podcast apps and stop my patronage, as a result. I know that membership income is a strong counter-point to all the bitcoin stuff but it makes no sense to continue patronage here. โ˜น๏ธ

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

If there is an episode or two of interest to me in the future, Iโ€™ll listen to those via the public, ad-supported feeds and do my best to skip past bitcoin stuff. Iโ€™ve liked listening to the @LateNightLinux family of shows more these days (as a patron) primarily because the quality of their content is excellent and has no noise (to me).

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

Also, I wanted to give a shout out to the excellent @pythonbytes (hosted by @mkennedy and @brianokken) show for anyone who is looking for a good, short-format podcast. I love their content and their effort to provide chapter markers with appropriate background image and relevant links for each section, accessible inline in the UI of most podcast player apps.

Due to the ongoing uncertain times for podcast revenue, please financially support your favourite podcasts, if you can!

Just heard the shocking news about the passing away of a colleague from India who my wife and I had met just a week ago at a work sprint and heard kind and concerned words from about my wifeโ€™s injury that she had traveled with. This is a stark reminder of our mortality, impermanence, and, in many ways, the futility of life. We should cherish people in our lives more! ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜จ
