I'm going to back off a wee bit on my general criticism of "reaction videos", at least as far as Hitchcock's masterpiece "North by Northwest" (1959) is concerned.

The film blows away every reaction individual, pair, or group that I've come across watching it. In most cases, they've simply never seen a film like this before, and are staggered by it in pretty much every respect (including the fact that, of course, there's no CGI). But really everything about it impresses them, as it should. And they all are amazed at a complex plot and what is indeed a most remarkable transition at the very end, from hanging on a cliff to a berth on a train. Probably the only transition that beats it is the flying bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey."

And you also can see some of them noting with disdain that so much of what they've seen during their lives was obviously just copying of themes that originated in films like North by Northwest, and now excited to see other films from back then.

Which if nothing else, tells us how the film industry of recent decades has failed young people (yeah, and everyone else too) so dismally.

@lauren A while back I introduced a youngster to Lawrence of Arabia, and they were quite impressed with it. I was surprised, to be honest.

What do you guys use for audio routing on linux? Since my radio is already connected to my computer for rig control, I want to route its audio to and from my bluetooth headset that is connected to the same computer. It's an FT-991A that can send and receive audio through its USB port, so no crazy cabling tricks should be necessary.

@petrillic I have some Newark, Allied, and Radio Shack catalogs from the late 60's and early 70's. They're great fun to idly flip through.

The grub rescue prompt should not say "Welcome to GRUB!". If you find yourself here on boot, something has gone horribly wrong.

You see a strong signal on your waterfall, so you tune over there real quick to see what it is. But just as you get there the signal disappears, so you wait a couple minutes to see if it comes back. It doesn't so you start tuning around the band again, and as soon as you do, the signal returns. Never fails.

I worked a famous "Star Trek" quote into my comments for the CPUC lambasting AT&T's attempts to end landline and other crucial services here in California. I haven't filed my comments yet, but I'll confirm if anyone can guess what the quote was. No additional clues.

@lauren Given that AT&T likely isn't telling the whole truth, and the seriousness of the situation if certain people lose their landlines, I thought it was a good attempt.

Very bad noise on 40 on down right now. It comes and goes through the week, but mostly comes. I think someone around here has grow lights or something. It's very frustrating.

@shuttersparks I actually spent the summer in Clendenin with my sister back in the early 90's. That was a kind of bad time in my life so I don't actually remember much about it. She's in Charleston now.

@shuttersparks I've tried to do some training in the past, but I can't do it long enough to learn anything. My lack of patience is the biggest limiting factor in learning CW.

arth,
@arth@fedia.social avatar

@shuttersparks Thank you for the encouragement. I'll definitely consider starting learning again.

Your mention of being an engineer and musician didn't surprise me at all. First, it's been my observation among people I know that musicians typically make good CW operators. Also, I've noticed that a many engineers tend to be involved with music in some capacity. That includes being musicians themselves, producing music, or just plain enjoying it quite a bit. I've often wondered about that engineer/music link, and when I've spoken about it with some engineers I know (mostly EE's with a couple of CE's thrown in for variety), we concluded that it's because of the relationship between music and math. One naturally follows the other, I guess. I'm sure there's been a study about this somewhere.

I like to listen to good music. I enjoy quite a wide variety, actually. But that's as far as my interest in music goes. I'm not musically inclined at all and don't really care to be and I wonder if that's why I struggled so much in an EE program. I had to repeat a few math classes, and by some miracle I earned a BSEE in May 2022.

I've never had an engineering job though. I work in IT because it pays better than an entry level EE.

A great new plan for YouTube and Google!

Actually stumbled into a video where the guy managed to say "Let's jump into it!" TWICE in the same useless introduction before getting to his actual "content".

Here's my proposal to . YouTube already has Copyright Strikes and TOS strikes. Too many and you lose your channel. I propose a new type of strike, the "Annoying Intro Strike". Every creator gets one free use of "Let's jump into it!" and one free use of "Let's get started!" Each additional use of either phrase in a video intro is a strike. Three strikes and the creator loses their channel, unless they pay Google $1. They then get their channel back, but another three strikes is another violation, and then they need to pay $10 to get their channel back. The fine for each subsequent violation continues to rise exponentially. I'm sure that Google can automate the detection of these phrases.

I'm not just looking out for the sanity of YouTube viewers with this proposal, I'm offering Google an entire new lucrative profit center.

doesn't make it at all obvious how to install a new server with your original domain with their dynamic DNS system. If you try to use the original domain during install, it will tell you that domain is already in use. To get around this, they say you need to post a request on their support forum to manually delete that domain so you can set it up again. This is unacceptable to me, so I searched around until I found the answer. Here it is: forum.yunohost.org/t/solved-re-use-of-a-domain-name-for-a-new-installation-of-yunohost/2063/3

This process isn't covered anywhere that I could find in their official documentation, and I don't know why. There should be an option to import your original domain configuration during install to make this easier. Of course, that would depend on if you still had your original domain configuration in the first place.

I did. I mounted the old hard drive on my desktop to copy what I needed to a thumb drive, then copied that to my server. It was easy and painless once I finally discovered what I needed to do.

arth,
@arth@fedia.social avatar

@yunohost Hey that's great! I originally set up my domain far longer ago that, so I didn't get that option. Is there something in the settings to do this for those who have domains that are more than 7 months old?

Have you ever seen a news story that says "so and so said on Bluesky" or "so and so said on Mastodon"? I never have.

arth,
@arth@fedia.social avatar

@lauren I've seen it only one time, although now I can't remember where. Some big tech site like Techcrunch or something. But somewhere like that would be more likely to do it than a big mainstream news site, I think. They're all still in love with Twitter and Facebook and barely know that Mastodon (and all of the other activitypub compatable platforms) even exist.
