One of the surprisingly nice thing about is that there's no special treatment of speakers other than being guaranteed a ticket - no special badge, no special areas, no special dinners. It's just one big community where speaking is just one of the ways to contribute, and all the others are just as important.

@mjg59 Dunno, for conferences we get asked for a quiet speaker room (which really is open for everyone, but mostly used by speakers to prepare).

Badges differentiate between Staff, Speaker and Attendee - which helps finding speakers. It's not a large difference, but it helps.

Our conferences also don't make a profit, but they break even. Otherwise it's not sustainable. And after all, conference is not going to happen without talks and speakers.

@mjg59 We also recognize volunteers. Given our conferences don't have makers, they have sponsors. But sponsors are not handled differently than attendees.,

Depending on conference size it's between 20 and 80 people who help making it happen, one way or another.

Today, I had an alert on a self-hosted database running on with 1TB of RAM and 18TB of NVMe (in RAID10-like). 100% i/o write usage. 3k connections. Why on earth do we need that amount of resources? There must be something wrong in the design.

I very occasionally check my formerly-known-as-Twitter account (because every few weeks, someone sends me a DM still).

I'm disheartened to see that there's still so much content over there I miss here, because so many accounts are only on X still - including friends, but also orgs like Amnesty Germany, local initiatives, etc posting different content to different channels, et al. I assume it's the same on BSky.

Don't get me wrong, I love the , but I hate missing out.

Twelve years ago I was invited to present on #DNSSEC in Moscow. Quite the show actually: we had simulataneous translators (think: EU parliament) who translated my English to Russian and back for questions from the audience.

Imagine my surprise when I met @krisbuytaert there: he too had been invited to give a talk.

The stay was great: it allowed me to brush up on my Russian: I learned how to pronounce 'nyet'.

Well, they have big changes! For "security reasons" soon I can't use a username for login anymore, or a phone number. Only email address.

Anyone has an idea why they are fixated on the "username" part of the login? Not that I'm using the platform ...

@Seirdy Honestly? Sounds complicated. Plus I need to be aware of any comments, only then they show up. So far Mastodon is friendly, and I just implemented the block list for when I need it. I rather have open discussions and don't need to rebuild it every time.
