barryamelton,

This exist already for Fallout 1 & 2 and is great! Fallout 2 Community edition: github.com/alexbatalov/fallout2-ce

barryamelton,

This is not enough, the code is old with vulnerabilities that will be exploited with automation nowadays. To correctly do this you need open source server code, or to have it maintained.

barryamelton,

What do you mean by specs then? The protocol? The “protocol” is the ABI of the server binary, the logic of it. The networking protocol is super simple. You need the server code for replicating any server.

barryamelton,

I will not buy Nintendo ever again. I’m glad they have sullied their own name.

What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

There are a myriad of news articles here on Lemmy that display the abhorrent influence billionaires have on our society (especially the US, where I reside). I consistently read comments where the posters appear hopeless and despondent of the situation, while others jokingly refer to the guillotine....

barryamelton,

Tax the income of corporations not the profit. The same way you get taxed your VAT. That means that corporations can’t tax evade: if they make income in a country, they get taxed. They can’t go an declare the profit in the Netherlands or Ireland and skip paying taxes.

Create and use parallel institutions to allow society to thrive without needing to play the billionares economy game. Example: communication tools outside of a market involvement such as Lemmy, Element (matrix). Economy tools. Association tools. See the application of Dual Power by socialists, which is what you are proposing here, a redistribution of power and wealth.

Vote for those pushing for these.

barryamelton,

You can sell GPL code. Even if you aren’t the author. What you must do is share the code with those customers though.

barryamelton,

You perfectly can sell GPL code. And you can double-license yourself (provided that you are the copyright holder) as GPL and a privative license. A lot of companies do that, legally and correctly.

barryamelton,

Accesibilty is also key for automated end-to-end tests, too.

barryamelton,

Yesterday they enabled monitoring of all messages in their servers. It was obvious before, but now they are getting even more 1984. Communities should migrate as soon as possible.

barryamelton,

I tried the app but it doesn’t even have a way to register an account.

That sounds like you tried Element X app, which is beta (it says so everywhere). One should still be using the Element app for now.

barryamelton,

They drafted this law via lobbying. They didn’t lose, but we didn’t win. And now the topic will get forgotten as we already have a law.

What the hell is this shit? Instead of pushing for the return to traditional pensions, capitalism is celebrating the idea that Millennials and Gen Z may simply never be able to stop working. (www.cnbc.com)

Traditionally, retiring entails leaving the workforce permanently. However, experts found that the very definition of retirement is also changing between generations....

Here’s a study of work hours from medieval times until now, by my favourite YouTube channel, Historian Civilis: m.youtube.com/watch?v=hvk_XylEmLo

(Please see comments) Alternatives to Signal if they exit EU due to ending E2EE

Like the title states looking for E2EE apps (Android and iOS) without going into much details or needs to be robust enough and easy to use for anyone and stable for operations that are susceptible to constant electronic warfare. I did some research and thought about replacing Signal with Molly and wondering if it will still work...

barryamelton,

He didn’t want Signal on FDroid because surprise surprise he just wanted to roll their own crypto coin with insiders knowledge. You can’t do that with open source so easily. There’s a reason they didn’t publish code for years. That people still support those crooks, who have lost all credibility, for a privacy app, baffles me.

Thank god we have Matrix now.

barryamelton,

Conservatism is dead. If we do nothing, climate change will profoundly alter the way of living. If we act, we prevent climate change, but we will profoundly alter the way of life. In both cases, there’s no place for conservatism. It’s just closing the eyes and covering the ears like a child.

how to tell you are using Arch without saying it. Don’t use a rolling release on your own if you aren’t willing to pay the maintenance cost. edit: no, I’m not an ubuntu user.

barryamelton,

my private desktop Linux installs still occasionally bork themselves for no good reason and require a reinstall

Edit: oh, you aren’t even OP. But I see I triggered you. And you have repeated the same you are saying in the parallel comment? Are you here reading all comments to this specific comment?

barryamelton,

Because it is copyright laundering, which is ilegal. We are just too early in the tech to have it established. But see cases open against Microsoft’s Copilot.

barryamelton,

You dont seem to know what you are talking about, or are dissingenous.

Copyright is the tool that allows to enforce GPL. The same with other free and open source licenses.

You seem to be leaning towards “permissive” libertarian licenses like MIT and BSD. Those don’t care much about the end users (I got your code, now fuck off I can do whatever I want with the modifications, including never sharing them back and making the whole thing closed source).

But for GPL and licenses that protect the rights of developers (including the right to ask follow-up developers to keep the code open for the benefit of users and developers), copyright laws are the tool that enforces that.

The term “copyleft” is just a meme.

barryamelton,

I recommend one of the FOSS apps in fdroid for this, don’t use a proprietary one from Google Play (like the Google Authenticator).

Sadly, the first board game I played was Monopoly at ~10, and that drove me away. Then I rediscovered them in uni with Settlers of Catan and Risk.

barryamelton,

I have a pinephone (not pro) collecting dust, because it’s nowhere near as usable for anything, sadly. But I look forward to linux on phones. I recommend a OnePlus 6 with your choice of linux on phones to be honest.

barryamelton,

Oh, you. I remember you from another thread the other week, saying how Chromium is not Chrome and that this would never happen. Hi. It is happening. Also, I remember telling you to stop moving goalposts, which is what you are doing here.

Microsoft would be happy to pay Firefox to set Bing as default (has happened in the past already) so even your goalpost moving is moot.

Come on, wake up.
