My name is Alex. I’m a frum Jew and registered nurse.
This is my first social media site, so I’m still figuring this all out.
I’ve been spending a few years recovering from a massive brain hemorrhage. Getting to relearn how to walk, talk and eat was a blast. Like being two years old again :-P
I enjoy spending my time studying #Torah, bookbinding, playing X-Plane, and solving logic puzzles.
I also have a weakness for #Cats and #Postpunk .

Let's not forget, though, that those responsible fo the most death in the 20th century we're all proudly atheists (Stalin, PolPot, Mao, etc.).
I'm not sure religion has anything to do with it.

דברים כב:ז
שלח תשלח את־האם

The only Mitzvot rewarded with long life are honoring parents and sending away a mother bird. Chullin(142a) tells of a boy sent by his father to get eggs. He obeys and also sends away the mother. After, he falls to his death. The gemara asks, where is his long life? And perhaps he was thinking of sin. No! The gemara states that הקב"ה does not consider thoughts to be in the realm of action. How do you impact the world with your thoughts?

I played 5-string for years. It's not "bass" without a B string.

The drummer and I just watched each other and ignored the guitar. Like any building, if they can't stay on their foundation, they'll collapse🤪.

דברים יז:ט
אל־השפט אשר יהיה בימים
Sifrei (153) ask, why does this seem superfluous? Rashi says that even if a judge may not appear equal to one in Those days, we must listen, because he is the judge in Our days. In the Gemara (R.H. 25b), we learn that each generation builds on the last despite our perceptions (c.f. Avos 1:1 and also Koheles 7:10).
In Elul, our time of reflection, consider what we learn from our past. How do you see yourself in the present?

sigh we're still talking about this I guess...

Jamie Foxx didn't say something anti-semitic. He said something people thought was anti-semitic.

Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

bborn,

@mekkaokereke
Sadly, I've heard that all too often in the south😿 . The thing I've never understood, though, is that their texts make it very clear that the Romans did it.

bborn,

@mekkaokereke
I know I shouldn't butt in, sorry.
Apologizing for being misunderstood is not an apology, though, as it places the onus on the listeners rather than taking responsibility (c.f. every Republican apology😋).
It seems, to me, that he did a good job at owning it though.

bborn,

@mekkaokereke @baruch
Eek! I was unaware of that. Intentional usage is certainly unacceptable. It even makes me uncomfortable when black rappers say this. (I know plenty of synonyms for 'Jew', that I would never say or write).
A comparative linguistic analysis of various language groups though is a more complicated conversation (Albeit, there are several Hebrew and Yiddish words I would self-censor depending on the audience).
Usage within a language that one is native in is very questionable.

דברים י:יב
Today we read of the things expected of us: ליראה וגו. R. Chanina references this pasuk (Berachos 33b), while claiming that all existence is guided in shamayim except יראה. In what way does this define our free will? It is only asked of us. What else is asked of us here how does this impact us?
Ramban says that הקב"ה has no need for these things but that it was asked because we need it. What is that we need?

bborn,

@uma @TorahStudy
I can respect that. This account was set up to discuss Torah (albeit, I'm apparently the only one who uses it🥺). Shas and rabbinic traditions are a major part of our culture and learning. Proper Torah study is comparable to the academic approach. Without reference there can be no inference. Every individual scholar can then be linked back to previous sages and so on to Sinai. Commentaries are essential too (e.g. Ramban). Without them, the risk of misinterpretation is dangerous.

bborn,

@raf @TorahStudy
As I understand, when an argument is for the sake of heaven, multiple viewpoints can be right. The important thing is to take ourselves out of it. An individual who makes judgments based upon only their experience is merely expressing an opinion. This has no validity for us as a whole. By comparing it to academia I was thinking that, if one turns in a thesis with no references, they have offered nothing.

bborn,

@raf @TorahStudy
Sadly, there have been many times when an individual has taken it upon themselves, alone, to decide what is meant. Even with many followers convinced to follow an individual, this rarely works out well. (Nadav and Abihu, and Korach come to mind but the historic examples are endless).

bborn,

@raf @TorahStudy
I'm not sure of the specifics but if it is lshem hashamayim, then it would be a good study.

bborn,

@raf @TorahStudy

I was just thinking that, you can find a lot of shiurim online. Contemporary rabbis, who synthesize their learning to discuss new insights into the Torah, poskim delving into modern applications of halacha etc. Just like what it sounds like you are looking for here.
You can Google them but it may be hard to determine what's reliable. There are good apps too (mostly just for daf yomi but I've also been using Lander Torah lately, which has a good variety).

Moshe Rabbeinu hear exhorts us again against avodah zarah. The last time he left us, in our fear, we made the egel zahav (beginning the three weeks). Now that we set off on our own for good. How great the concern has the concern become?
Even in galus though, we can find home (c.f. ד:כט):
ומצאת כי תדרשנו בכל־לבבך ובכל־נפשך וגו
Where do we go from here?

Parashah Devarim begins by recounting our failures but concludes with our successes. In the Haftara we read לא תוסיפו הביא מנחת־שוא. But even this ends with hints of progress. As mentioned earlier in Devarim too, לא־שמע הי בקלכם . Both our avoda and our voice have become empty. Tonight is Shabbos Chazon (vision), a day to reflect on our pasts and future. What do we hope to see? Where do we go from here?

דברים ב:טז
כאשר־תמו כל־אנשי המלחמה למות

The three weeks was meant to be joyous. The Gemara (Taanis 30b) asks why the 15th of Av is especially festive. One answer is that, this is the day when הקב”ה again spoke directly to Moshe Rabeinu, something absent since the meraglim. What is the reason for our transition here? What comes from this dying off and why men of war in particular?
May Tisha b'Av be joyous again. Speedily in our days.
