New blog post!

I recently did a deep dive on "Class E" space for a talk at RIPE, and figured I should write up the talk in a more searchable fashion :)

Reclaiming IPv4 Class E’s 240.0.0.0/4

I dunno if this is a Pixel phone specific thing or just new Android, but my phone keeps nagging me to try "Audio Emoji". Well finally me and @eta tried it and it's as terrible as you suspect it to be.

I will now live in constant fear of activating this with my cheek while on a "serious business" call

Ha! The Discord GDPR/Data Export thing reveals that it's running models to figure out what gender you are. If you go to /activity/analytics/events-*.json and grep for predicted_gender you get something like:

<span class="st">{</span>
  <span class="st">"user_id"</span><span class="op">:</span> <span class="st">"282657081457115136"</span><span class="op">,</span>
  <span class="st">"predicted_gender"</span><span class="op">:</span> <span class="st">"male"</span><span class="op">,</span>

  <span class="st">"day_pt"</span><span class="op">:</span> <span class="st">"2024-05-15 00:00:00 UTC"</span>
<span class="st">}</span>

Anyway, they seem to have this datapoint over time! Meaning you can make a graph of how male/female/NB you are according to discord, here is mine:

When the QinQ script is a bit too aggressive.

root@nikhef:~# ifdown enp1s0.801.10
Bringing down and removing the service VLAN interface enp1s0.801...
Bringing down the trunk interface enp1s0...
Shared connection to nikhef closed.

"enp1s0" was my sole transit interface... and this box was not on a PDU.... So I guess this is a "see you tomorrow when someone unplugs you"

One of the few times I've yelled "FUCK" at the top of my voice in a empty apartment...

I'm forever disappointed that windows phone did not survive, It had one of the better UX/UI stories that only now my Pixel 7 is equivalent to, while also just being decent hardware.

Though it still was windows through and through, demonstrated by the one time the phone crashed/rebooted/whatever during some activity and I got greeted with a classic "bootmgr" screen asking me to insert the windows installation disk into my phone...

How do we collectively stop Google's NOC from replying to every single IX mailing list post thinking that people are talking to them directly. How do we teach them about mailing lists. Is such a thing possible????

Small bgp.tools :bgptools: update!

You can now change display options for the propagation graphs. You can turn on the display of IX Route Servers, You can quickly hide your own sessions, and you can switch between straight lines and bendy ones.

Has 2000::/12 been announced again?

Not yet!

But that did not stop GTT / AS3257 from carrying such a similar type of CIDR typo mistake

https://bgp.tools/prefix/2600::/12#connectivity

To be clear to those less network-ey brained, what likely happened here is that AS46887 has a point to point link in their network, Like for example 2614:123:11:55::a/127, and they typo'd it to 2614:123:11:55::a/12, that automatically rounds down to 2600::/12 and then that got announced... and then GTT was like "yeah sure, why not"

Finally got around to buying a new EMF-IX switch. Hopefully this switch I wont totally hate at the end of the event and give it away to anyone willing to take it.

The first EMF-IX switch was gifted to someone, and then a year or so later the switch found itself back in my flat because that person became a flatmate.

Then the next EMF-IX switch was just.. weird. 10G capable, randomly rebooted in the night, had weird behaviour/configs

Let's see if a EX3300 won't self destruct in the (literal) field

Why do some carriers who run 2-2 configured aircraft use seating letters that go A,C,D,F.

Are they just imagining a hypothetical B and E seat in a aircraft that could never physically fit it?

Dear furry and/or furry art aligned people: I am looking someone who could make a animated icon in the style (or not? I like simple but happy to be wrong) to this running cat that I currently use to show that a query is "running" (get it?)

Ideally I'd like a couple, since there are many moments in bgp.tools's UX where I am not the thing that is running, more I am waiting for other things to happen. It would be nice to have animations for such events.

Happy to pay industry rates or w/e, after all bgp.tools is a commercial product. But I have no idea where to start or look for such things

(boosts for reach appreciated, since I don't think I have many artists as followers)
