listening to a podcast of a couple of British idiots who get scammed into “buying” a protected island in the Nicaraguan caribbean and 1) god how are they such incredible idiots 2) the pronunciation of Nicaragua is hilariously weird
Not trying to call out anyone in particular, I see a lot of people doing this, but I'm really curious and would like to understand this better.
Folks who use vague alt text with your images ("a funny book cover", "photo of me outside"), what is your thought process? Is the image description intended for sighted people? Or maybe your admin made alt text mandatory? Or maybe that really does seem sufficient.
@stefan Not sure if others have the same issue but I really struggle with some description levels. My mind knows what it wants to describe, but my writing sometimes may not rise up for the occasion. Description of the stuff was always boring for me until I discovered Terry Pratchett and TTRPGs.
I also found myself sometimes not sending a message because I didn't have enough spoons to create the proper ALT text it would deserve. Sometimes I prefer not to send at all than to write a crappy one.
Just because someone specializes in something you don’t like doesn’t mean they’re some kind of villain.
A lawyer specializes in advising and defending AI model creators? Tough titties: somebody has to do that job, and everyone deserves representation in a court of law. It’s better if someone specializes and knows the ins and outs.
A former Twitter cofounder did business as an angel investor and maybe some VC stuff? Okay, in what capacity? A guy who has repeatedly started companies giving his insights to new startups doesn’t have to be this malicious, predatory thing.
But no, half of you hear “Masto board has Twitter guy and AI/Blockchain bro”, and the community immediately erupts into hysterics while doing exactly zero research on any of these people.
@deadsuperhero Not saying they are villains. But I honestly think we need more explanation here. A good chunk of people around this place treat VC and AI stuff as a toxic asset and the eyebrows that are raised tend to be the same which were raised regarding Threads federation. I actually thought that the Threads FAQ was a good one, so I suggested same type of explainer is released in this case.
@deadsuperhero Anyways, the good thing about Fedi is that its nature will not allow market destruction. There is a W3C standard here and enough software for everyone to go to their preferred place. I also thing that most of the reactions come from a place of love, not of destruction. Many people think this place is better than others, and will be very vocal if they feel any threat. Explanations are vital. Which by the way makes the works of folks like WeDistribute very important ⭐
Me, feeding 2 people and 2 cats on a 60k EUR salary without benefits (because technically self-employed), reading those comments that claim a 501(c)(3) is some kind of nefarious scheme to hide money 😐
@aenea@Gargron I agree with Aenea here. I think this deserves some FAQ in a similar way you guys did with the Threads federation. There are many people (yours truly included) that is not knowledgeable of some of these intricacies, which is what is generating the dissatisfaction
En Soria han encargado un estudio para entender la falta de camareros. Ahora saben que se explica con malos horarios y malos salarios. Hicieron un estudio para eso. You gotta be fucking kidding me
@deadsuperhero@moshidon I do not use akkoma, but Moshidon is my client of reference regardless. It's a badass app. No other Masto app made me as comfortable as this one
I just saw a disclaimer in front of a #Romance book where the author actually felt that they had to justify why they actively did not include any homophobia in the book and that instantly made me very sad because you know this actually happened in the past where readers wrote to a writer and actually got super furious at them for creating a utopia in a book. Sometimes, I read things like this and I really don’t know what criticism to take seriously and what I should ignore. You, as a reader, might not like hearing this, but did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason why an author created a world with no homophobia in it because they just want to give some joy and a story without traumatizing some of their readers? Maybe they just wanna give Their readers and escape from the real world for a little while? I sincerely don’t believe for one minute that it’s erasing homophobia in the real world. I just can’t imagine anybody sincerely getting outraged over that, just blows my mind. @bookstodon
@weirdwriter@bookstodon I am a game master, and it's very different because coherence here is not a must. That said, all the cats and dogs in my games are immortal. Of course, reasons differ. But if this is fantasy, anything can be possible
