The existence of "climatic wind tunnels” where things can get very exciting indeed, implies the existence of "anticlimatic wind tunnels" where the breeze ramps up but then just kinda dies away before it gets really good

The “smart home” is definitely not all the way here yet. Source: half of my very small quantity of smart plugs deciding to just not work most of the time after my last network maintenance.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

Relatedly, I wish there were better Thread network inspection tools out there. What I've found ("random bonjour introspection tools" and “random IoT brands' shitty apps”) is…not great.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@greg these are all Thread so they're effectively their own network anyway. kind of baffling. worked just fine til recently too. gonna have to futz with my Thread edge routers (there are two) to see if that's the issue somehow.

It is probably just being crummy

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@greg proximate cause seems to be having things grouped in HomeKit, ungrouping but otherwise keeping the same lights in the same automations is working better so far

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

Looks like my proximate issues are perhaps some accessory-grouping bug in HomeKit? (Maybe one that was exacerbated by some change in Thread topology?)

Ungrouping all the smart plugs but leaving them in the same automations (then testing those automations) is working better-ish so far.

Does mean I can't go "turn on/off the white lights” (implicitly leaving the RGB strips on) anymore, but whatever.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

Lol, spoke too soon. Works reliably ish when using “test this automation”. Still broken when it fires on schedule. See what I mean?

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@greg no just HomeKit, though I do want to try hass sometime, despite its rep for being awful to config manage

cli local command spitting out lots of irritating json-esque pseudo-errors lately. happens across versions. none of them seem to be anything I'm doing wrong anywhere. grumble

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@onelson like, I'm not /sure/ it's actually JSON. probably?

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@onelson yup and I'm not sure anyone's ever done that? probably in some cursed situation.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@onelson I mean yaml is way nicer to read as a human

i built my octoprint setup with a tiny little n5105 celeron-based box (about a 3-4" cube) because 1) i could get it; 2) i got 8gb and 256gb storage for about the price of the cheapest raspberry pi 4.

@petrillic @offby1 I can't even tell who the maker is here, lmao

I am holding on so tight my knuckles are white. Just gotta make it a few more hours and then it's the weekend and The Last Drive-in and pizza and beer.

Happy Zelda day to those who celebrate!

@basepi playing Skyward Sword?

bitprophet, to random
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

Fuck. I still have a like 80%-done Yakuza0 playthrough that needs finishing. And I tend to make a point of not playing games literally at release. And yet.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

Ok! I’m now all set to play the next installment of my favorite game series ever!

“Resisting the Zeitgeist”! 🤣

(Zelda is great but it’s definitely not my favorite series ever. BotW fucking slapped tho.)

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@basepi I’ve ended up playing nearly all the 3D Zeldas and they were generally good (OoT can get in the bin tho). BotW was next level however!

Glad you’re liking TOTK, I need to hurry up and finish Yakuza0…

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@tyrel @basepi Absolutely not. I get why it was revolutionary at the time but holy shit it aged like milk. Also absolute garbage control fidelity.

really slacking on the exercise this week for multiple pretty good reasons. severely hoping this is not The End of this particular habit

I've been waving my arms up and down about eBPF malware for a while, and it seems like it keeps getting better: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/stealthier-version-of-linux-bpfdoor-malware-spotted-in-the-wild/

But good news—eBPF can also be a powerful tool for detection. It's what Sysmon for Linux is built on!

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@mttaggart loving the use of "getting better" here 🤣 it's like how COVID keeps "getting better” 😉

Feeling pretty good about snagging the one good domain from this GTLD.

bitprophet,

@brandon A+ work. we would also accept "lexus.nexus” as long as it's a mastodon instance focused entirely on either cars or research
