I love finding people deeply invested in a narrow topic sharing their expertise with everyone.

Welcome to the complex and surprisingly fast-moving world of bicycle chain lubrication: https://zerofrictioncycling.com.au/lubetesting/

You'd think such a comparatively low tech field with over a 100 years of history would have matured and stagnated by now. Nope. The top brand chain oils we bought just five years ago have already been superseded by superior alternatives.

In total, 80.5% (323/401) of the occupants had at least one AIS>3 head and neck injury. In 99.1% of these cases (320/323) contact point injuries to the skin or bone and/or clear contusion injuries to the cerebral cortex indicating direct impact to the head were evident. The three occupants with no signs of blunt trauma to the head died of anoxic brain injury due to positional asphyxia after the MVC.

Even if Google managed to completely disable uBlock Origin, it would still be challenging to take down a DNS-based adblocker. Another use case for Firefox :)

I expect they will ultimately do with ads what they've already done with maps: Serve them from the top google.com domain. Few people want to block that.

Minor clarification nitpick: It's not unreliable with "curl on an apple OS", it's unreliable with "apple's build of curl".

Turning on the batsign. @revk you are my only hope. I've been aching to build some kind of power quality monitor, something that currently costs like 10k in relevant currencies. But I think we could do so much better. Here's the idea: https://berthub.eu/tmp/sampler.pdf - you in?

bjst,
@bjst@mastodon.social avatar

@bert_hubert @revk What you are looking for is called a Power Quality Monitor. There are components that measure and calculate most of what you want for ~€20, but yes of course you need to scale down the voltages properly.
I'm working on integrating an Analog ADE9430 at work right now.

It looks amazing, I wish you the best of luck.

With utmost humility, may I ask why you are choosing to write a new firmware from scratch instead of going with Rockbox? There are so, so many person-years of work, discussions and end-user support sunk into Rockbox, freely available to use. And yet you want to... do it all over again? I am genuinely, and respectfully, puzzled.

Yes, be careful to not charge your 4.2V cell with 10 fricking volts! "Overcharge" my ass. This has about as much relevance to reality as tossing it in a fire.

    Today I finally learned why third-party capsules always produce such weak coffee in my Nespresso machine.
    It is so they can abuse the patent system: Nespresso makes the machine intentionally leaky, and instead put a patented silicone seal on the pods that competitors are legally prohibited from using.
    And so begins my search for a replacement machine.

    The thing that is annoying me today? Having to explain for the nth-million time that a charger is not a power supply. They're designed differently. Chargers are designed to provide constant current, power supplies are designed to provide constant voltage.

    bjst,
    @bjst@mastodon.social avatar

    @aallan
    That was never true though. Chargers don't provide constant current. That is at best a gross over-simplification.

    3 years ago, I invested in The Smart Tire Company.

    Today, I got to pre-order Metl, the world’s first high performance, lightweight, airless, never flat, and sustainable bicycle tire made from shape memory alloys.

    NASA developed special tires for its Mars Rover Program. The Smart Tire Company brought that innovation to the bike lane.

    The Reuters article about Tesla's range display is a strange nothing-burger.

    The story boils down to "people make incorrect assumptions because they didn't read the manual" but it is dressed in so much drama and innuendo it's silly.

    And because it relates to Musk, everyone suspends their critical thinking and gleefully amplifies it.

    Screenshot from the Tesla Model 3 user manual: Predicting Energy Usage When navigating to a destination, Model 3 helps you anticipate your charging needs by calculating the amount of energy that remains when you reach your destination. When navigating, the map displays this calculation next to the Battery icon on the turn-by-turn direction list (see Navigating to a Destination on page 156). When the turn-by-turn direction list is compressed, touch the top of the list to expand it. The calculation that predicts how much energy you will use is an estimate based on driving style (predicted speed, etc.) and environmental factors (elevation changes, wind speed and direction, ambient and forecasted temperatures, air density and humidity, etc.). As you drive, Model 3 continuously learns how much energy it uses, resulting in improved accuracy over time. It is important to note that Model 3 predicts energy usage based on the driving style of the individual vehicle. For example, if you drive aggressively for a period of time, future range predictions will assume higher consumption. Also, if you purchase a used Tesla vehicle, it is recommended that you perform a factory reset (Controls > Service > Factory Reset) to ensure the predicted energy is as accurate as possible.
