New Post about some Web Components stuff and styling

So this little library to let you style shadow dom from the outside page has 6 different "modes" it can work in... I'd love for people to try it out and give us feedback about whether/which they preferred (including if the answer is 'none of them') and use cases, etc...

I thought perhaps a good way to prompt that is to illustrate the uses so here's a whole series of examples with each mode..

Not sure how unpopular this opinion is but: Using an 's for possessive is the more intuitive thing with "it's" despite being "wrong" and I think we should just all rebel and do that.

I am not a designer (I think I'm actively bad at design even) so I don't mean to bash anyone, but as a user I find interfaces like this absolutely terrible:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/the-1-sitcom-of-all-time-isn-t-seinfeld-friends-or-the-office-according-to-data-see-the-top-100/ss-BB1lXB5Z?ocid=msedgntp&pc=U531&cvid=0616b5997d6a41b88a4a09b1380343cb&ei=41#image=1

It's so damned busy and distracting, where does the article stop/start? The article itself literally seems to stop at "Counting down from , here are the best sitcoms of all time." which is the clickbaity shit that gets you there in the first place. Where? Where is it? Can you find it? I can't.

You ever "know" something, but then later on grok some dead simple aspect of it and your mind it blown with a whole different appreciation of it? Today this hit me when it was pointed out that or 'white' is not necessarily the most intense white. Like, I guess I knew this, at one time there was a lot of focus on our ability to make blacker blacks, now when I think about improvements I think about more saturated colors.. but.. yeah.

Why does black and white film that has been colorized all look like it was done in the 1960s, and what (if anything) informs the choices of colors of clothing, decor, etc? I think the answer to the first question is just in how it was done manually - but surely digitally we can do better. I wonder if this is a thing you could use AI to "remaster" old photos. note: I love the old photos and history and don't want to lose them, just'd be interesting to see as if it were snapped with a camera today

I need a good new podcast. Preferably one that is web related, but really pretty open. I had a nice, maybe overly full one developing during football season, but now I am feeling the emptiness... Suggestions?

Out of curiosity: Is there anyone using shadow dom on plain divs or something? That is, using it on something besides a custom element?

Wait google is killing off google podcasts?!

Too many times I find a google product that is basically just what I need and get used to it it gets killed.

What are y'all using as a podcast thing on Android?

in 2024 <g:plusone>, which I guess has been pointless since when Google shut down Plus in April 2019, still appears on more sites in the HTTP Archive March crawl than the native <var> element. I wonder if they still try to load the code and draw the buttons and so on. / @tunetheweb ?

I really dislike threads in literally all of the places you might talk to people (slack, matrix, discord). Their UI throws me off so much and it honestly yields to me missing messages and being frustrated. I guess I am the anomaly here?

New Post! half-light

Building on conversations that followed my shadow-boxing experiments (thanks for all the feedback and related posts), I think perhaps people might like this better: A new tiny library that lets you style shadow roots inside your page, right from your CSS and a @media query like

@media --crossroot { ... }

Lots of details, examples, links and a codepen that you can play with in the post:

Sometimes when I have to give my name I say "K" hopefully before they type "C", "A-R" and then I have two similar sounding letters, so I say "D ... as in Dog", "E... as in elephant", "LL"... and sometimes I say "as in Cool J", but no one has ever even chuckled at this.

Do i have any followers at all who also buy the kind of cylinder of rolled oats (quaker, for example) .. if you do, am I imagining that somehow the last cup of so somehow always tastes bad? Or at least, has a taste that seems like it's from the packaging or something?
