I have written a blog post, something I rarely do.

Unfortunately, since the last time I wrote one, Hugo has apparently become a "framework", the entire config has changed shape, everything throws deprecation errors, and my blog renders as a blank page.

Just, why

@danderson Oh no! This is such a huge bummer. Looks like a lot of the replies are about breaking changes, but I really feel the "wtf are they doing?! this was supposed to just turn a pile of markdown into a pile of html!". FWIW I'm finding zola a good replacement for that niche, and the lack of "marketing" and "shiny website" makes me hopeful it won't go down the same path: https://www.getzola.org/

I understand tabs are technically correct but still prefer spaces and I can no longer justify why but also refuse to change my position

I feel like causing chaos this morning:

How is “daemon" pronounced?

Boosts welcome for maximum chaos!

@majorlinux Looks like a lot of people are wasting the potential of this fun word.

@majorlinux I mean, why talk about "day-mons" when you can talk about demons 😈

Things worked pretty well with the default behavior of browsers, links, and forms. But then we invented web apps and it was so cool we decided that every website is an app and prevent default became the default and unhandled javascript exceptions became so prevalent that a nightmare UX is considered the norm by most web users. So it's really nice to see the pendulum swinging back towards the platform with things like #remix and #htmx and the other frameworks that are following suit.

How are people using on ? A global rustup or something more nixy? I’m new to nix and rust and have just been using rustc and cargo nix packages in nix shells which worked great until I needed to add new targets. That seems to depend on rustup? Which is making things muddy. I’m worried the answer is “it’s finally time to learn flakes” so I can better understand the suggestion on the nix wiki about this…

should I actually learn this programming language before trying to build something with it? (no)

Since moving to I've been loving the ability to try out packages without installing them. Just played around with the new 1.0 release and didn't have to install anything, let a script change my .zshrc, or anything like that. Walked away clean. It's a good feeling. And if I do decide to use it for a project, I'll just include it in the nix-shell for that project, which still won't touch my base system or anything that could affect other projects. It's rad and cool.

so like i always get mixed up with XML about how key-value things are supposed to be represented.

either:

<thing>other</thing>

or:

<collection>
<item>
<key>thing</key>
<value>other</value>
</item>
</collection>

the first one seems correct, but my brain screams for all the additional structure and semantics of the second one.

I'm sure I've said this before, and many others have as well, but it's INCREDIBLY frustrating and scary how frequently I have to keep making my generated password less and less secure to meet some website's "minimum" "security" requirement.
