I know 60 down and 20 up sounds wildly slow to everyone outside the US, but frankly I'm just shocked that I can do that on DSL over POTS wiring that hasn't been updated in 30+ years. Two 30AWG copper wires are streaming HD hentai into my house? Seems pretty futuristic to me.

This guy wanted to help me trim the bushes, but got scared away by the noise of the trimmers (i’ll be quieter next time, sorry)

I’m becoming more and more resolute on getting a tatoo for my 50th birthday (in June).

As this would be my first one, I thought I’d just pose an open question: is there anything I should think through regarding size, placement or other aspects. Happy to get advice from people more experienced. I expect there are many rookie mistakes to avoid.

The tatoo will be Africa-related and likely involve a map of Africa. So, yeah, I have not decided on the artwork yet.

I would love to see a non-profit that's basically, "Apache for contributors". Apache is great for companies who want to de-risk open source software. What about an org that goes, "i see that your project is important to the community, what can i do for you today?" Maybe fund, maybe find contributors, maybe acquire build infra, always listen and support

fun fact! the numbers in coin cell part numbers are dimensions. a CR2025 is 20mm diameter and 2.5mm thick!

I bought a 15$ meat thermometer and it came with batteries and a screwdriver, because apparently designing a snap fit mechanism was more expensive than including an entire tool. Also, it can detect the orientation and flip the screen accordingly which I assume means it has an entire accelerometer inside. I'm tempted to buy a second one just to disassemble it.

I find it fascinating that we talk about over engineering as if it's a thing in software engineering. It's not, cut it out, stop talking about that.

If I'm a contractor and I over engineer something, guess what? It works for that use case and all the future ones. The only thing I wasted was money and time. Did you make a 10 ton capacity deck when you only need 2 tons? Cool... It's still a deck.

Software engineering? We don't have over engineering. We have "building to solve the wrong problem"
