TIL: 1.27mm hex-head keying exists. This being distinct from 1.3mm.

I have a driver that is, turns out, 1.27mm, and our Tangara screws are currently 1.3mm. I have been gradually fucking up the sockets in the screws with my 1.27mm bit.

1.27mm is... [drum roll] 0.05 inches. FUCKING IMPERIAL DOES IT AGAIN

Tangara prototyping! Just churning out some different shapes and detailing to see what feels or looks nicer.

(feat. black tangara stand-in PCBs + displays + touch wheels)

Same, but this time an assembled beige case. The sides pull in little bit down near the touchwheel.

[thinks a bit]
actually I think computers have been shit for a long time, and I much prefer computing of the present.

I think the only reason I enjoy retro tech is that it’s like medieval reenactment; I can have my fun, but then pack my gear and go back to my microcontrollers, a laptop with 3D modelling and video playing, and a desktop PC with a kinda-old VR headset that lets me fucking fly convincingly-real planes. I don’t have to go back to leeches and uploading files via cPanel or whatever.

Further explainers on the MiniBrute replacement cheeks I posted pictures of earlier:

I used a plane to do the sloping nose bit (shaded in pencil, pic 1), then coarse sandpaper on a sanding block at an angle to get a flat surface to use the plane again to make the big 45° chamfer (shaded in pencil, pic 2+3) on that now-smaller nose.

Two blocks side-by-side, now with areas around the front outer corners shaded.
One of the pieces clamped in the work table, with a little 45-degree chamfer sanded out of it (cross-section diagrammed), to rest the plane on to make further, more precise cuts.
The resulting piece, the wood reducing in height from the mid-point forwards, with a triangle chamfer cut out of that shaped area. I put a plane in the background of the photo because I’m a wanker.

finally got the m625q out of the box, and even though I’ve seen one irl it still strikes me how comically teeny they are. just look at it!

do you like reading a listing full of "the wall plug can break off the main body of the charger exposing the internal wires" and "the power bank may overheat and catch fire" for Comsol and Keji products?

may i introduce you to:

oh my god, these two blender viewport options just changed my life

('Shadow' and 'Cavity'. Shadow is good, but Cavity adds an additional layer of legibility, for me. I also recommend Color: Random to differentiate parts.)

I roughly use "number of browser tabs open" as a lagging indicator for my stress / burnout / how on top of things I am.

satisfying brain-scratching noodling from the weekend + earlier:

(I am very new at these, and am going to keep devouring whatever reference material and examples I can scrounge. Also, you 1st Angle vs 3rd Angle culture war people need to take a chill pill.)

It is satisfying getting past 'just get the tool working correctly' bullshit so you can focus on the 'this is a dumb idea and i want to try it because i find it funny' bullshit.

(Once again, 3D printers.)

The new Tangara prototype case showed up! Like the last one, it’s translucent polycarbonate that’s been CNC’d and bead-blasted.

(This one is the @ErinRose special; she’s pulled the case sides in further, fixed the button reliability, done a bunch of CNC optimisation work, and overall made it look nice.)

Same, but the cases are now standing up to show the difference in length as well.
The case halves, showing the insides, on a desk. They’re translucent, as the post-CNC bead-blasted finish leaves a lightly-textured surface
