IMO old could be called "the social network for news" and it functions like a natural monopoly. all journalists, newsmakers and concerned citizens have an overwhelming incentive to use the same network. He's been fucking around but I think we're still early on in Elon figuring out how use his control to maximize his advantage. And somehow too few seem to have thought this through or care enough to compromise and work with rivals to help build an uncontrollable alternative.

It seems the #1 issue with people joining nostr resolves around censorship, but not in the way you'd think. A handful of Redditors said they wouldn't join nostr because nostr has or could have hate speech, pedos, etc. and you couldn't ban or moderate those users.

I get it. 99.999% of humanity doesn't approve of that content and doesn't want to be near that type of content.

I don't know if I have a good enough answer for them though. I told them that with free speech, that means all speech is allowed, which includes the good speech and the bad speech.

If assholes want to have their corner of nostr and hang out with other assholes, then so be it. The other 99.999% of humanity will hang out everywhere else with positivity and good vibes, zapping each other non-stop.

It's a good first step. When you account for negative reputation indicators (web of distrust) and bidirectional follows (friend connections), then you can calculate some really solid metrics that are almost impossible to game by scammers and dominate by having the most followers.

What if there was a decentralized support option built into every application? It ties into your banking app but also lets you one-click into a page with information from the developer. How much they make from how many people and what they are spending it on. Privacy and security. What improvements are coming. Transparent, sustainable software built on a healthy relationship between users and the developer. As a very visible alternative to fucking us for the shareholders/investors.

So people would rather maintain their safe space on the and let everyone else continue to rely on Elon to be the newswire for the world, than try to make this place be the best place ever for uncensored journalism. Especially when disasters like hit. I don't get it.

Yes, I like it think it of it as peer to peer censorship. The overall system resists censorship because an author isn't tied to a particular server.

Hi @alex , how do you think nostr will scale when a user has to be connected to a big number of relays if he follows many accounts spread over those relays? How should it handle historic posts as pleroma does? Or is this what dito solves?

I have re-read the magnificent article by @kissane, titled "Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t". On Bluesky, she asked those people who had tried/used Mastodon and bounced off, what had led them to slow down or leave.

https://erinkissane.com/mastodon-is-easy-and-fun-except-when-it-isnt

tl;dr; reasons why they left Mastodon:

  • Got yelled at, felt bad
  • Couldn’t find people or interests, people didn’t stay
  • Too confusing, too much work, too intimidating
  • Too serious, too boring, anti-fun
  • Complicated high-stakes decisions

"I don’t know if Mastodon can grapple with the complexities of mass scale. Lots of people would prefer it didn’t—staying smaller and lower-profile makes it friendly to amateur experimentation and also a lot safer for people who need to evade various kinds of persecution. But if Mastodon and other fedi projects do take on the mass scale, their developers must consider the needs of people who aren’t already converts. That starts by asking a lot of questions and then listening closely and receptively to the answers you receive."

For many parts I agree. But despite everything, Mastodon/Fediverse is still the best place to be on social media. Let's make this even better. We have the power.

how to do RSA keys on the Fediverse the good way

DONT: generate an rsa keypair for every user on signup and then store the entire thing in the database. that's called BLOAT, Mastodon

DO: combine the user's id with a secret key as a seed for the RSA PRNG, create the RSA key and then cache it in a LRU cache with a max of like 1000 or so. do all this in realtime so inactive keys get evicted but can be quickly regenerated at any time.
