PSA: I just discovered that if you have enabled the “Application supports iTunes file sharing” option in your Info.plist then your app's documents directory will appear on device in the Files app.

I'd thought that this only applied to Finder on the Mac. I've been getting sporadic reports of users accidentally deleting their steps database directly on their iPhone, which confused me to no end. Now I finally know how they did it. Maybe I need to add a “PLS_DO_NOT_TOUCH_ANYTHING.txt" file.

The listing of all the files in Pedometer++’s documents directory, including a collection of core data files.

@_Davidsmith If they do accidentally delete it, does the file go into a "recently deleted" area and can be restored?

I’m watching the Jeopardy Masters and can’t fathom why they’re revealing the daily doubles. It’s always fun to discover it along with contestants, knowing ahead of time doesn’t add any excitement, it removes it.

Also, I couldn’t even remember where they are located when I watched a reveal.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie It is an interesting experiment. I wonder if you asked 100 fans about this what the consensus would be. I think I prefer not to know.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie I hadn't thought of that. If people thought Ken and James were cheating before, I don't think this new feature will change their minds.

Since we're on the topic of Jeopardy, one thing that is driving Eliza and I nuts is how pronunciation matters sometimes and not others. We cannot figure out why there isn't consistency there.

A cool thing about being in the UK is seeing all kinds of new cookie notices on websites I frequently visit.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@Chris See if they have an "accept all cookies" button there that actually means you accept all cookies.

Looking for UX feedback.

I added profile/account button to bottom toolbar in . But I'm not sure what should happen when you tap it.

Would you prefer to open your profile or see account switcher? Most apps I've seen open profile but I personally more often switch accounts.

I'll probably open account switcher and redesign it a bit to show that tapping on active account would open its profile. But perhaps there is better way?

Screenshot of Pipilo app with account switcher open.

@luckkerr tap for profile, hold for switcher.

It's surprisingly difficult to find a cheap (< $30) set of BT over the ear headphones that work right on a Mac. I got one set like 5+ years ago and finally broke, have tried 4 diff ones so far and they are all annoyingly buggy, have bad battery life, or bad range.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@paul The Soundcore series from Anker, while not less than $30, are very very solid. I’ve been using them for many years no issues.

I do wonder if there’s any kind of testing happening for the Apple Music app. You don't need to be using it for very long until you come against a strange little issue and need to restart the app 🤨

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@jonhicks I feel as though I’d go mad if I worked at Apple, knew about these issues, and they simply went unaddressed for several major releases. I feel like I’d be burning my weekends fixing things management told me I wasn’t allowed to spend my time on.

Money is a terrible metric to judge someone’s… well, anything. Just because someone made money at one thing doesn’t mean they know anything at all. Stop listening to people with money.

So I’m reading Walden. It is good. But I’m just not into it. A sci-fi book I want to read just came in the mail. Do I pause Walden? Or push through and finish before starting the new book?

@chris I agree. But, sometimes things you work hard at pay dividends. 🤷

One other thing I've done to help with the usability and discoverability of my account on Mastodon is create a permanent redirect from my website. Pointing people to cdevroe.com/ma will always point them to my Mastodon account, regardless of what instance I happen to be on at the time.

Buying a solid battery lawn mower for a small garden is harder than expected. The very small models all look like plastic trash while the sturdy models all are for large gardens and/or professionals… 🤔🌱

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott Recently purchased a Ryobi for my mother-in-law and, so far, it seems great. She has a rather small backyard - but large enough for a 21” push mower.

I usually use Safari for all of my personal stuff and Chrome for all my work stuff. I've been going all-in with Arc as a replacement for Chrome lately, and I'm hooked. I have to assume every browser is going to copy its split views before long, but it's got so many more great

@andy This morning I read your post from April 5th about your experience on Mastodon lately. That stinks. I'm glad I haven’t had the same experience (at least so far) as you do. Though, I will say some of the content warnings baffle me? I've found Mastodon to be a much more rich experience - people sharing their projects, thoughts, and feelings rather than their hate for something. Perhaps I was using Twitter wrong towards the end?

I hope you find a way to have the experience you want!

Who can I talk to at NASA about providing better RSS support?

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers I'm with you. In January of this year I included NASA, and other organizations, in saying they should consider having a Mastodon instance.

https://cdevroe.com/2023/01/24/help-mastodon

If an organization thinks it is important to host their own email or websites, they should think about hosting their own social media accounts as well.

andy, to random

this is advice I normally have to give to framework fans, but it applies to mastodon too:

You can love something and be critical of it. It’s healthy to do so. Criticism is not an attack.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@andy Totally agree. People who love X should be the ones most critical of X. Criticism can be delivered with kindness.

Sent you a PR with my RSS feed to add to your list. With humility.
