Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@drewdevault does this apply when it comes to using gcc-go tho? If not I guess I'll be using that exclusively for future projects.

So, we need to have a bit of a talk. Don't worry, it's a good thing.

How should I say this?

Building and reporting on this space has been a unique and rare privilege. We're reporting on a nascent technology beat, and witnessing it grow and evolve in real-time. Working with @damon and @laurenshof on @decentered and getting to talk to so many incredible people has been validating beyond my wildest dreams.

@deadsuperhero well, I could maybe contribute? Idk if you're stingy about "real names" like some publications can be, but I'd consider contributing if I can remain under a pseudonym.

MAKING THE FEDIPACT WEBSITE MORE ACCESSIBLE

some accessibility concerns with https://fedipact.online have been brought to my attention and i'm working on addressing them. more specifically, the readability of the color contrast and the animations

i wanna put a button on there that flips the text and background colors, making it hot pink on black, and disables the animated floating hearts (they're already disabled if the user has "reduced motion" on)

i just... don't have the web design skills necessary to do so lol. BUT someone else is working on it!!! so it should be fixed and better soonsies

thanks to everyone who pointed this out :heart_cyber_pink:

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@FediPact I would recommend using the built-in media prefers-color-scheme functionality of CSS for flipping the colors so it uses the built-in options of the browser by default. Hell, I'd be happy to join in working on this :)

We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.

Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.

@box464 Nice! I've been thinking of making a turn-based game that's played over ActivityPub at some point although I find the protocol quite difficult to implement as a dev sadly.

Does this post federate? Please reply letting me know if it does!

I'm trying to see if Piefed works just as well as Lemmy when it comes to taking in posts from microblogs on the fediverse such as Mastodon. This is an important part of the fediverse's interoperability imo.

@playground

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@atomicpoet it's a Threadiverse application built with Flask. Based on my attempted testing with the above post, it appears to not federate posts of the Note object type for some reason. This is different from Lemmy which is fine picking up posts like that, making the first line into the title.

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs why do societies need organization in your view? Genuinely curious because a more loosely (or perhaps even completely not) organized society is certainly possible and could be a more realistic pathway towards abolition of hierarchy than an "anarchist" organized society. At least that's how I think about it, given that I've had nothing but bad experiences with orgs, including ostensibly anarchist ones.

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs ah I see. Not the term I would have used but that makes sense.

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs hmm I suppose as you put it, networking. That seems better to describe what it actually is. And as far as I'm concerned, that does not mean a lack of chaos either (not that chaos is even inherently a bad thing anyways)

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs yeah I think we were running off slightly different definitions of organization. I generally don't include things like affinity groups in that.

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @magitweeter @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs basically any formalized group with bureaucracy and formal meetings and presumably a name of some sort. An affinity group wouldn't be an organization by this definition because it's neither bureaucratic nor is it formal and usually tends not to even have a name.

    gabek, to random

    People too often talk about “The Fediverse version of X”, or “Add ActivityPub to X” without actually talking about the point of it, or what the functionality would be. It’s discussed like a badge that says “I did Fediverse to it”. I wish people discussed this kind of thing from the feature level first. What is it you want to do? What would federation offer you? Does that even make sense for that product? Just saying “Fediverse version of the Chase credit card app” sounds great, but what would that even mean? Is that something people need, or do you just want more “Fediverse stuff”?

    I often get requests for random Federated ideas with Owncast that sound cool, but don’t truly solve a problem people have. Identify a problem, come up with useful functionality, work backwards from there.

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @wjmaggos @gabek the former arguably already exists as Funkwhale I think? I haven't actually used it so I can't be sure but it seems pretty cool.

    ch0ccyra1n,
    @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

    @punkisundead absolutely opposed to it. From my experiences in the local activist scene which tends to emphasize left unity, it's especially shitty as an anarchist to be talked down because of my issues with tons of hierarchy and abuse in those orgs because "we've gotta have left unity". The only solution I can think of is to split off and commit to anarchist principles, knowing that it will alienate many.
