  1. If you've read a book series, was there a weak book in the series? What made it weak?

In the past I hardly noticed. I avoid reading unfinished series and inhale one book after the other when I like it. I did start the unfinished Earth Children series by Jean Auel. Loved it including book 4. Book 5 was OK. The last one was a disaster IMO. Meh.
Harry Potter? Meh after book 3.

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @gahlearner I read like, maybe two or three of the books and just couldn't get invested. It was basically slogging through it because "it's popular therefore it must be good!" which was of course a very silly idea.

I made the mistake of going on Twitter today to find a tweet. 😬

I'm glad Urbanist Twitter is not representative of actual urbanists, because it's basically just this. 😆

I will never understand the mentality of people who dislike a YouTuber and then rant about it for months on social media, instead of doing something sane like, say, watching something else, making the content they want to see, or maybe touching grass.

I genuinely think that too much social media rots people's brains.

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@notjustbikes while I largely understand the sentiment, I would push back on the whole "making the content they want to see" part. It's rather difficult to do as you presumably would know, having made quite a lot of videos at this point. There's also serious privacy and safety concerns with putting your voice and/or face out there especially for marginalized people. Hence why I don't make videos even though I would be down to otherwise I suppose.

atomicpoet, to fediversenews

Yesterday, there was a post on @fediversenews that went viral. Since a few people are wondering what @fediversenews is, it's a Friendica group. It's a group that's been active since December 2022. Functionally, it works similarly to a Lemmy or Kbin community.

Or, in Fediverse parlance, @fediversenews, is a group actor. Its purpose is for people on the Fediverse to congregate together to speak about a given topic. In @fediversenews's case, that topic is about news pertaining to the Fediverse.

@fediversenews is not the originating profile for messages. Rather, it hosts messages and then boosts them to subscribers of the group. If you are not subscribed to @fediversenews, you will not receive boosts.

However, it's also important to know that because messages do not originate from @fediversenews, it is still possible to receive messages from there even if you are not subscribed. For example, if you follow the original post's author or receive boosts from other accounts.

Unsubscribing to @fediversenews does not prevent you from seeing posts sent there, it just prevents you from receiving boosts specifically sent from the group actor -- if you are already subscribed to @fediversenews. Likewise, blocking @fediversenews does not prevent you from seeing posts that are tagged with @fediversenews. However, blocking does prevent @fediversenews from hosting and boosting replies to the originating post.

If you want to block that topic from your timeline, I highly suggest applying a filter to "Bluesky" and "bridge".

It's important to remember that Mastodon does not yet support group actors. For this reason, not all features of @fediversenews are rendered ideally on Mastodon.

For more information on Fediverse group actors, here's a helpful link:

@atomicpoet I'm wondering, what particular features of the group actor aren't rendered ideally on Mastodon? Well, besides that you can't create a group from Mastodon of course.

@kescusay @AncientFutureNow I'm personally more annoyed about people (including on occasion the cops themselves) who drive and park right in the middle of the bike lane. Seems to mostly be a problem around Dave's Hot Chicken, likely because they have curbside pickup even though the building is surrounded by bike lanes so there's no real curb to speak of.

Either way, I'm not so sure that arresting people would be particularly helpful for either problem. There's got to be another way, somehow.

Just a reminder that if you're a customer, you're paying the platform to give anti-vax, conspiracy-theory podcaster Joe Rogan $250M to spread dangerous misinformation.

I switched to Deezer. There are many other choices: Apple, Amazon, Tidal, Qobuz and others. If you are the type to abandon Twitter because of Musk, why pay Spotify to make Joe Rogan wealthy and the world less informed?

What the fuck is going on with the Eugene sub

Is it just me or the borderline fascist anti-homeless rhetoric just simply out of control? Not only do you have entire topics with hundreds of posts advocating for forced institutionalization, calls for vigilante violence, and downright genocidal discussions daily – the mods seem completely absent at all from these topics....

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@kescusay perhaps then, a larger effort must be made to encourage people on the Eugene sub to migrate, either to Emerald Social (from where they can join) or to Lemmy

How did we go from way too many semi popular english Misskey forks to literally only having one soon (Sharkey)

Firefish kinda had its moment but currently doesn't seem that much will happen

Foundkey while still maintained is not really meant for more than one user instances

Iceshrimp is currently doing an full C# or well rather they are doing their own thing not using the MisskeyAPI and also rewriting the frontend, which means when thats done they aren't really part of the Misskey Family of forks anymore

Catodon, from the start is not trying to be anything like misskey and more like a user friendly mastodon-key mix, but they are also interested in using Iceshrimp as a kinda upstream meaning they would also not be part of the Misskey Family of Forks

how did we go from being hated on for being another fork, to it being the only major true english misskey fork left, if doesn't comeback to life and if iceshrimp continues its rewrite

@julian thank you for [[pinhole]]! It's great

I hacked it very simply to support subscribing by multiple accounts (in my case, I run both this one and @flaneur and would like to allow boosting by them ideally)

ch0ccyra1n,
@ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org avatar

@julian @flancian yeah, can confirm. I couldn't get follows working as I was unable to successfully sign follow accepts, and I felt like it would be better to work on other projects anyways. I'll likely release the source code shortly just in-case someone else who's better at understanding http signatures wants to have a go at it.
