A small, but hopeful update: #WeDistribute has been going through a lengthy process of becoming a Nonprofit Corporation. The main hurdles are now complete; we just have to tackle the big one!
I am working to establish my long-term hobby into a proper 501c3 Non Profit, with the goal of taking tax-deductible donations, sponsorships, grants, and premium subscription sales to raise funds and pay people: writers, artists, audio engineers, and more.
There's a lot to figure out still, but we're hoping to do a big crowdfunding push soon!
So, we need to have a bit of a talk. Don't worry, it's a good thing.
How should I say this?
Building #WeDistribute and reporting on this space has been a unique and rare privilege. We're reporting on a nascent technology beat, and witnessing it grow and evolve in real-time. Working with @damon and @laurenshof on @decentered and getting to talk to so many incredible people has been validating beyond my wildest dreams.
We're the #Decentered podcast by #WeDistribute. Our goal is to share insight into some of the incredible innovation going on in decentralized social networks today.
We sit down with people building incredible things, and talk about their story, what they're building, and what their visions are.
We Distribute Media has been successfully incorporated as a nonprofit at the state level, but we're still waiting at the federal level. It's a slow process, but I have high hopes.
Once something initial is put into place, we can focus on the next phase: applying for grants, sponsorships, and crowdfunding.
The ultimate goal is to have an entity capable of covering operating costs, and paying writers, an editor, and people to help with A/V production.
All of this is new and scary and exciting, and I have a lot to learn. But for now, the waiting process is painfully slow.
We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:
Decentralized Communications
User empowerment
The future of the Internet
Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.
However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.
Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute
