Unhinged take: in a growing trend of a renter economy, the only way to future-proof yourself against AI is to own things. Real estate, businesses, shares or IP.

A funny paradox in that the only way to push back against AI capitalism is to participate in allocating capital.

This is a chrome extension that writes engagement replies for you using AI.

There's a lot to unpack here. But my takeaway is that we're drifting further and further away from each other.

AI is becoming synthetic human connection. Soon, we'll be interacting with each other through AI generated summaries of each other's thoughts.

I believe we desperately need a return to the village. In-person interactions. Laughter. Cycling clubs. A good cry with a friend. Live music.

Been a hot minute! I recently got into self-hosting and now I need to self host all the things!

Nextcloud on my home server was an absolute nightmare to set up, but at least it's incredibly slow 😅

Between a $6 VPS and my home machine, I've eliminated $100+/month in subscriptions.

@noflcl docker-compose using docker engine on Ubuntu. To be fair I’m dumping TBs of photos on it without a redis service so understandable 😅 I initially tried to do the AIO install and finally got the SSL sorted with duckdns but it still gave me dns propagation issues despite running my own dns server correctly for hello world app. I got frustrated and just spun up the vanilla image on a local port and wiregaurd in.

@ironicbadger a few that come to mind: Laravel Forge (I still love this service, no shade), Google Cloud storage plans, iCloud storage plans, Make/Integromat premium, Mailchimp, Trello, some streaming services.

ChatGPT is one of the only subs I kept since I can plug it into automations and such.

Now I run a $6 VPS for the non storage heavy stuff that need public access and then wiregaurd into my home box for things like nextcloud / media.

@ironicbadger I did not, I’m super intrigued!!

Ya’ll I can’t deal with selling on Facebook Marketplace anymore.

I’d rather donate this stuff than deal with these people 😅

chrisarter, to firefox
@chrisarter@phpc.social avatar

What browser are you using?

I love FireFox, but more and more frequently things just simply don't work and nobody seems to care (understandable, it's a tiny market share).

So I end up having to switch to Chrome or Safari to complete some task.

As a user I don't want to see the web monopolized to just two choices. Diversity is good, albeit a pain in the ass as a dev myself.

Most alternatives are just Chromium under the hood 😧

@f11xter I reread my toot and realized it sounded like FF itself had the bugs, but I meant that devs seem to only test in Chrome and Safari when FF experience is broken. I love FF and have used it for years. I just wish ppl building for the web would consider the market share when building and testing.

chrisarter,
@chrisarter@phpc.social avatar

@f11xter web devs, not FF devs *

@mez Yeah it's usually things that involve some kind of video / multimedia. Or, some of my utility payment websites for instance wont' display a payment form in FF. I have to switch to Chrome. It's hard to predict what the common denominator is but it just seems like many web developers ignore FF completely, which is a shame because it's my favorite browser.

@chrisarter@phpc.social avatar

@mez

Latest example. Shipping form is completely broken in FF at UPrinting.com but works great in Chrome.

The year is 2030.

Computers boot directly into the browser. IDEs are just a web app now, running in the GPU. No one knows why. Or how.

All programs run in 4 nested containers on top of a hypervisor abstracting over the 5 major computational clouds. The last time a branch was predicted correctly, in any CPU anywhere, was 4 years ago.

Cloud costs are withdrawn directly from your retirement fund.

Ext7 just came out, it's written in Javascript and uses AI to guess what the file may contain.
