I’d love to hear from product designers on why this form factor has emerged in remotes, when all models in my childhood were much bigger and button-festooned. Simplicity, smarts on the device they’re controlling, user preferences, advances in tech, power requirements and so on.

It’s a bit like “there is no such thing as a tree”, just a buncha organisms that decided ‘tree’ was a good solution; I’m not saying World Remote Corp sat down and decided, but the pressures leading here are interesting.

@craiggrannell I mean, I haven’t used mine for years, and the reason you know this is that I… think it was a review unit from… MacUser…? (It’s one that could write to a delightfully geeky ‘stone-based’ archival CD-R, but iirc it also writes to regular CD-Rs.) You really are welcome to have it hang around for months. And hey, maybe knowing it’s mine will kick your procrastination!

One of my favourite things about Mastodon is the niche creativity you get to see - when things aren’t determined by an algorithm, your creative projects don’t need to be understood or approved of by a majority in order for me to actually see them in my timeline. So I get lots of random fun art projects, knitting projects, unusual erotica, creative photography, nerds building cool things with wires. Love it. Cheers me right up, thanks Fedi ❤️

Brought this grand old lady down from display at lunchtime to help me format some old 3½″ SATA hard disks prior to selling. My GOD we forget how noisy old PowerPC Macs were, but she’s an absolute beauty, ain’t she? Also, 10.4 was the pinnacle of OS X and it’s been downhill since then. 😇

In other news: anyone have a 2½″ PATA/IDE drive (or equivalent) they’d like to donate to resurrecting a Wallstreet PowerBook G3? Its spinning hard disk is too noisy. Can pay!
