Just some akkomane.social stats for you.

We currently have 39 total users with 90% retention.

268 posts have been published, and we’re connecting to 8,454 peers.

Not bad for a server that’s less than a month old.

gets a lot of blowback for making federation opt-in on their service.

But from an admin perspective, thank God they’re doing that because if 120 million accounts suddenly joined the , this could kill many servers.

Meta might have the resources send messages from that many accounts, but many Fediverse servers don’t have the resources to receive all of them.

This is why resource efficiency is such an important concern for the Fediverse at large. Hence why I’m interested in building a community of enthusiasts.

I think one reason has yet to join the is precisely because they’re worried about the effect all those Tumblr accounts could have on the current Fediverse.

This isn’t a matter of just turning on a switch and – BAM! – welcome to the Fediverse!

It’s something that takes a lot of planning and diligent preparation.

@timbray You’re not missing anything. The problem is more than plausible, and it’s a good idea to err on the side of caution.

@timbray But Tim, when it comes to this thing, you’re smarter than me. Maybe you have good ideas that I haven’t considered.

@timbray I’m also in favour of federating with Threads, and I agree with you.

I guess what I’m getting at is that if the Fediverse does eventually reach billions of people – and why shouldn’t it? – then we definitely need to consider problems of scale.

I have no doubt that folks like you and @evan have the means to address all this. However, for many people starting a server for the first time, this is something that needs further consideration.

To give you a general idea at how well akkomane.social scales, it’s currently running on 1vCPU with 2GB of RAM. With these resources, it’s able to host 25 users – and things are humming along quite smoothly.

In contrast, the minimum RAM I’d use for a Mastodon server is 4GB. And that’s only if I posted a few times a day and had an account with less than 100 followers.

So really, if you’re concerned about managing scale, then is a pretty good option for you.

And by the way, I’ve thrown the kitchen sink at to see how robust it is. It can stand up to a lot of traffic thrown at it!

The reason I’m excited about has less to do with whiz bang features, and more to do with scalability of the service.

With typical services, it takes a lot of resources to run them. And the more your server federates with others and redistributes messages, the more of a toll it takes on CPU and RAM.

More than one Fediverse server has closed because server admins simply didn’t have enough money or resources to keep them operating.

But Akkoma is great for low spec servers. This is why so many single-user servers use Akkoma. Unfortunately, the default UI/UX isn’t so user friendly.

However, I’ve discovered that an alternative front-end, Mangane, offers a UI/UX that is both familiar to most people, and offers lots of bells and whistles – such as quote posts, post scheduling, Markdown, etc.

Akkomane offers the best of both worlds: server stability and a friendly UI/UX.

I thought about providing an alternative front-end for people who prefer deck-like UIs.

However, I think it’s important that akkomane.social remain singularly focused on Mangane. If I want to provide access to another front-end, I can always spin up another server. Which I can easily do within 5 minutes.

Now the reason why I want to focus on Mangane, as opposed to other front-ends, is because – to 90% of people – aesthetics are important. When using social media, you want three qualities in a UI/UX:

  1. Easy of use
  2. Features
  3. Eye candy

In general, I think Mangane offers a balance of all three. Anyone can use Mangane because it’s a lot like Twitter – but better. It’s got features not found with most Fediverse servers. And just look at it – it’s gorgeous.

As for uses that Mangane doesn’t provide, I think clients can fill in that gap.

Does provide MFMs like and ? And, what is ?

Today I look forward to learning something new.

@kristian @spacehost @reiver @spacehost_help I’m not sure about username. However, almost everything is editable if you go to yourdomain.com/pleroma/admin. Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain.

So far, three types of people have joined akkomane.social:

  1. People who wants to try something novel and new (awesome!)
  2. People who want to run their own Akkomane server and want to try it before they install (yay!)
  3. People who are on a server that de-federates Threads, know akkomane.social hasn't de-federated Threads, and want to follow people on Threads (fascinating!)

At a certain point, I'd love former firefish.social users to try out akkomane.social and see how they like it.
