Found a Netscape CD at Goodwill, now I can finally get on the net!

I know a lot of people still hold off on updates for a long time because they might break something, but that's increasingly not a good idea. Leave auto update on!

It’s wild that there’s still no social media tools for most of the Twitter replacements. Buffer has great native Mastodon support, and you can make Mastodon text posts work with IFTTT using Webhooks (which is what I’m doing for @thespacebar), but that’s pretty much it.

Bluesky, Threads, Post News, Substack Notes, etc all have basically nothing outside of very limited enterprise-level stuff or API scripts. I guess everyone’s waiting to see which ones aren’t a fad?

The new Apple Pencil lineup is a mess now, wow. There are now three Pencils that all charge differently, and don’t all work with the same iPads. The USB-C Pencil isn’t even really an upgrade for the first-gen Pencil which was supposed to be the main point?

My favorite part of Amazon inventing yet another yearly sales event is every single seller finding my work email to spam "deals" for two weeks straight.

Adobe Illustrator now has a web version, in addition to the web Photoshop that left beta/preview stage a while ago. Pretty cool for Linux and Chrome OS people! https://news.adobe.com/news/news-details/2023/Adobe-MAX-Adobe-Unveils-the-Future-of-Creativity-and-AI-at-Adobe-MAX-2023/default.aspx

It’s wild that the Windows 12 subscription rumor took off with almost no evidence. Microsoft doesn’t need to make Windows a subscription, it’s already designed to upsell you to Microsoft 365.

"Google's overvaluation of iPhone trade-ins is about converting non-Pixel users to Pixel users. Even the trade-ins for Samsung phones are far and away better than the offers for Pixel trade-ins."

Lemmy seems to have the same problem as Reddit where no one actually clicks the link.

The latest @thespacebar article is sitting at 780 points on one of the big technology communities, but most of the people commenting definitely didn’t read it first, and the clickthrough rate seems to be pretty low (hard to accurately measure with fedi media).

I have a browser extension called Peek that displays pop-up previews for web links, and I’m working on some UI improvements for the next update. There's a new button that moves the preview to its own browser window, and a button that opens the extension settings.

Can anything be improved here? Maybe different icons? 🤔

“CMF by Nothing” is the worst tech branding I have seen in a long time, and Nothing isn't even established enough at this point to warrant splitting products into sub-brands. It's wild that Carl Pei can still keep raising VC money. https://9to5google.com/2023/09/26/nothing-cmf-smartwatch-earbuds-release/

So, uh, is anyone left running RCS that isn’t just using Google’s servers? Calling RCS an open standard at this point feels pretty silly, never mind the fact that it still really only works with Google’s messaging app. https://9to5google.com/2023/09/21/t-mobile-rcs-google-jibe/

Didn’t seem like any big surprises at Apple's event today. Honestly, my biggest takeaway is that it was the worst presentation Apple has done in a long time. Yet another "you will die in a car crash without our products” segment, coupled with a whole lot of greenwashing.

Anyway, I’ll be pre-ordering the base iPhone 15 because I want USB-C and the screen on my SE is now too small for most apps and websites. I will miss small phones. #AppleEvent

I'm working on a big explainer for Chrome's ad "privacy" feature (Privacy Sandbox) for @thespacebar. Does anyone have questions about it that I can talk about in the article?

HowStuffWorks is firing writers and editors and replacing them with AI. Not good!

"I was let go from my job 10 days ago at HowStuffWorks for this exact reason: I was replaced by ChatGPT. AI simply cannot produce articles that come close to the level of quality our team wrote, edited and produced for this brand for the last 15+ years.”
